{"id":17461,"date":"2020-11-12T21:16:38","date_gmt":"2020-11-12T21:16:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.com\/kenya\/?p=17461"},"modified":"2020-11-12T21:16:38","modified_gmt":"2020-11-12T21:16:38","slug":"layoffs-loom-as-coffee-chain-java-asks-staff-to-resign","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/kenya\/economy\/layoffs-loom-as-coffee-chain-java-asks-staff-to-resign","title":{"rendered":"Layoffs loom as coffee chain Java asks staff to resign"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Author: WAINAINA WAMBU<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>AfricaPress-Kenya:<\/strong> Coffee chain Java House has asked scores of staff to \u201cvoluntarily resign\u201d in a fresh wave of cost cutting measures.<\/p>\n<p>This comes after April\u2019s slashing of 40 per cent of staff salaries in a bid to ride out the economic impact of Covid-19.<\/p>\n<p>The restaurant chain told the hundreds of employees that it had run out of ideas even after reviewing \u201cevery aspect\u201d of cost reduction, including rent relief and cutting utility costs.<\/p>\n<p>Java House, which operates over 80 outlets across East Africa, noted that the pandemic\u2019s impact on the food and beverage business was not abating any time soon even after restrictions were eased.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDuring the last few months, we have looked at every aspect of cost reduction in the business, including re-negotiating rents, our procurement of raw material, our labour schedules and our utility costs and these are now moving towards a very low level in line with expected sales.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut unfortunately, the business is potentially over resourced at the current level of performance,\u201d the company said in the resignation forms it distributed to workers.<\/p>\n<p>The forms contain the Voluntary Separation Option programme, which Java describes as giving \u201celigible employees an incentivised option to willingly resign from the company\u201d by November 27.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJava has had to make a difficult decision to offer the programme to provide our staff the opportunity to receive a lump sum financial payment from the company, allowing them to create options for themselves following the prolonged effects of Covid-19,\u201d said the firm.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is also a way in which we can offer an alternative to those unable to work or on rotation to allow them pursue other interests.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In March, Java temporarily closed 14 of its shops as foot traffic dropped.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Author: WAINAINA WAMBU AfricaPress-Kenya: Coffee chain Java House has asked scores of staff to \u201cvoluntarily resign\u201d in a fresh wave of cost cutting measures.
