AfricaPress-Kenya<\/strong>: Nineteen kilometres north west of Nakuru town along the Nakuru-Kabarnet road is Kabarak University, which lies on the expansive farm of the late former President Daniel Moi.<\/p>\n

After a drive through the university, you arrive at Moi High School-Kabarak beyond which is the heavily-guarded Moi\u2019s home.<\/p>\n

At the centre of his compound, dotted with towering indigenous trees, lies his artistic mansion surrounded by flowers of different colours.<\/p>\n

Notable in the home is a slight depression behind the mansion where a mausoleum stands in the middle of a lush green lawn.<\/p>\n

For the first time, the mausoleum where Moi and his wife Lena were buried was yesterday opened to Kenyans as the country marked the first anniversary of the patriarch\u2019s death.<\/p>\n

Moi died on February 4 last year, while Lena died on July 22, 2004.<\/p>\n

The mausoleum is an open structure with versatile brown roofing and a golden wood interior finish supported by eight concrete pillars, two on each of the four edges.<\/p>\n

Attracting the eyes is the clear marking at the top of each pillar with the names of Moi\u2019s sons and daughters.<\/p>\n

To access the mausoleum, there are three staircases rising from the west. On the front right are the first two pillars tagged Jennifer and Jonathan. On the front left, the roof is supported by two other pillars tagged Raymond and John Mark.<\/p>\n

As you step in you first get to Moi\u2019s grave, which lies side by side with that of Lena, both covered with a grey plaque with white specks all surrounded by pots of fresh flowers.<\/p>\n

On top of Moi\u2019s grave is his name and words drawn from the Bible \u2013 Galatians 2:20: \u201cI have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live but Christ lives in me. The life I live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God who loved me and gave himself for me.\u201d<\/p>\n

Then, \u201cFare thee well world\u2019s statesman, husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, kinsman and friend of many worldwide.\u201d<\/p>\n

The grave is surrounded by two lines of rectangular tiles made of brown marble while on its left is Lena\u2019s grave with a similar design.<\/p>\n

\u201cHappy are they who are in the Lord they shall be comforted in his kingdom. For mother we say goodbye till we meet again at the foot of our creator,\u201d the plaque on Lena\u2019s grave reads, in addition to her name.<\/p>\n

Jennifer\u2019s pillar is paired with that of Jonathan, Raymond\u2019s with John Mark, Philip paired with Doris and Baringo Senator Gideon paired with June.<\/p>\n

Laying of wreaths was also conducted as per the order, with AIC Presiding Bishop Abraham Mulwa starting off.<\/p>\n

Jennifer and her family came in next followed by Sylvia \u2013 Jonathan\u2019s widow, Raymond, John Mark, Philip, Doris, Gideon and June before President Uhuru Kenyatta.<\/p>\n

Other leaders present were Kalonzo Musyoka, Musalia Mudavadi and Moses Wetang\u2019ula.<\/p>\n

In his speech, Gideon said the mausoleum was constructed by a local contractor assisted by Italians in collaboration with Moi\u2019s daughters-in-law.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe contractor who constructed our father\u2019s mansion is the same one who constructed the mausoleum, Mzee Moi\u2019s and our mother\u2019s final resting place, with the support of Italians. The concept was developed by Zahra, Eunice and Susan,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Zahra is Gideon\u2019s wife, Eunice is John Mark\u2019s wife while Susan is Raymond\u2019s.<\/p>\n

The mausoleum caught the attention of Nakuru Governor Lee Kinyanjui who appreciated the great work done to give the former head of state and his wife a proper resting place.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe way this mausoleum is built teaches us a lot. It means that the children are the pillars that made the late Mzee Moi\u2019s family stand strong,\u201d said Kinyanjui.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
