{"id":22065,"date":"2021-02-05T20:44:56","date_gmt":"2021-02-05T20:44:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/kenya\/?p=22065"},"modified":"2021-02-05T20:44:56","modified_gmt":"2021-02-05T20:44:56","slug":"muthama-ledama-denied-access-to-sonko-in-gigiri-cell","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/kenya\/policy\/muthama-ledama-denied-access-to-sonko-in-gigiri-cell","title":{"rendered":"Muthama, Ledama denied access to Sonko in Gigiri cell"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>AfricaPress-Kenya:<\/strong> Former Machakos Senator Johnstone Muthama, Kajiado Senator Ledama Ole Kina, and Kirinyaga Women Representative Purity Ngirici were disallowed to see ex-Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko, who is being held at the Gigiri Police Station in Nairobi.<\/p>\n<p>According to the station\u2019s OCPD Julius Kiragu, only\u00a0family members, lawyers and his doctor are allowed to see Sonko.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking to the media, former Machakos Senator Johnstone Muthama criticised the government for not allowing Sonko&#8217;s friends to visit him.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I have been here for 30 minutes trying to see how Sonko is doing but the gate is closed and police are armed to the teeth. I am his uncle for those who do not know but still I cannot see him,&#8221; lamented Muthama.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Yes he is locked in but it&#8217;s only good that his rights are respected and he is allowed to meet his friends, who want to sympathise with him. This is not fair, Kenya is a very open democratic country and the law should be applied fairly. Unfortunately, some people are misusing it,&#8221; he added.<\/p>\n<p>He maintained that Sonko is innocent until proven guilty.<\/p>\n<p>Ms Ngirici critised the system, saying it is behind\u00a0Sonko&#8217;s woes.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Criminalizing someone because you have fallen out with him is wrong. We are being put under fear, you can&#8217;t speak your mind because if you do, some funny charges will be preferred against you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt&#8217;s high time as a country we follow the rule of law.
