{"id":22934,"date":"2021-02-20T21:19:56","date_gmt":"2021-02-20T21:19:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/kenya\/?p=22934"},"modified":"2021-02-20T21:19:56","modified_gmt":"2021-02-20T21:19:56","slug":"epra-defends-fuel-prices-hike","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/kenya\/economy\/epra-defends-fuel-prices-hike","title":{"rendered":"EPRA defends fuel prices hike"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>AfricaPress-Kenya:<\/strong> Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (Epra) has defended its decision to increase fuel prices\u00a0at a time many Kenyans are facing harsh economic times as a result of the prevailing Covid-19 pandemic.<\/p>\n<p>The Central Organisation of Trade Unions (Cotu) had condemned the move, terming it \u201cinsensitive\u201d to the suffering population because it would lead to increased cost of consumer products.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCotu views this move by the authority as an affront to workers and Kenyans as a whole, and demands for the Energy ministry\u2019s immediate intervention in the matter to avoid any imminent confrontation that the government is likely to attract from workers and the rest of Kenyans,\u201d Cotu Secretary-General Francis Atwoli said.<\/p>\n<p>But Epra acting Director-General Daniel Bargoria said the increase was necessitated by the relaxation of the Covid-19 containment measures, as economies globally were restarted<\/p>\n<div class=\"ad-article-page-desktop my-2\">\n<div align=\"center\">\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-1464965995785-0\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>\u201cThe matter of pricing is emotive and concerning to many Kenyans because of the Covid-19 pandemic that has slammed the economy,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Competitive<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cAfter benchmarking globally, the demand for crude oil has considerably risen leading to the high prices in its importation\u201d.<\/p>\n<div class=\"newsletter-article row\">\n<div class=\"pad\">\n<div class=\"text-center px-md-4 py-2\">\n<div class=\"text mb-3\">Subscribe to Our Newsletter<\/div>\n<div class=\"form\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"textcol-12\">\n<p>Subscribe to our newsletter and stay updated on the latest developments and special offers!<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Speaking on Friday in Eldoret after a consultative forum on the draft review of the legislative framework for petroleum activities, Mr Bargoria said the import prices of crude oil were &#8220;very competitive&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTowards mid last year there was a collapse in the price for crude oil globally. But now the demand for crude oil and petroleum products globally is high, as a result of restart of world economies, making us procure it at competitive prices,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>However, the director general said, there were consultations within the Ministry of Petroleum and the regulator on how to stabilise the prices going forward.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBack in the 1980s, petroleum products were being sourced at relatively lower prices.
