{"id":23573,"date":"2021-03-04T20:55:07","date_gmt":"2021-03-04T20:55:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/kenya\/?p=23573"},"modified":"2021-03-04T21:03:48","modified_gmt":"2021-03-04T21:03:48","slug":"mike-sonko-set-free","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/kenya\/community\/mike-sonko-set-free","title":{"rendered":"Mike Sonko Set Free"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>AfricaPress-Kenya:<\/strong> Former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko has finally been released after\u00a0nearly a month behind bars.<\/p>\n<p>A source close to the former Governor confirmed \u00a0that Sonko was released on a cash bail of Ksh500,000.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;He was just released on the cash bail but I am not sure if he was allowed to travel to South Africa on treatment,&#8221; stated the representative.<\/p>\n<p>The former governor, who is facing terror-related charges, pleaded not guilty and was released by\u00a0Chief Magistrate\u00a0Diana Mochache at Kahawa\u00a0Law Courts.<\/p>\n<article data-align=\"center\">\n<div><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.kenyans.co.ke\/files\/styles\/article_inner_mobile\/public\/images\/media\/Nairobi%20Governor%20Mike%20Sonko%20during%20a%20court%20proceeding.jpg?itok=Y5M-XX53\" alt=\"Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko during a court proceeding.\" width=\"470\" height=\"470\" \/><\/div>\n<div>Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko during a court proceeding.<\/div>\n<\/article>\n<p>Among the charges included\u00a0financing terror activities and recruiting individuals to take part in terror activities.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOn or before January 1, 2021, at an unknown place within the Republic of Kenya, you (Mike Sonko) jointly with others not before Court knowingly recruited unknown persons to commit or participate in the commission of a terrorist act in contravention of the said Act,\u201d read the charge sheet in part.<\/p>\n<p>Another magistrate,\u00a0Peter Ooko, had earlier been told that\u00a0Sonko is mentally unfit to stand trial.<\/p>\n<p>Sonko&#8217;s lawyers argued that\u00a0the former Nairobi County boss had been\u00a0examined by a doctor\u00a0at Aga Khan Hospital whose report indicated that Sonko was unfit to stand trial.<\/p>\n<p>Although two medical reports presented before the magistrate indicated that Sonko had a bipolar mental disorder, Ooko\u00a0stated that the court was yet to\u00a0establish\u00a0if\u00a0he was unfit to stand trial.<\/p>\n<p>The magistrate then ordered that Sonko be examined by an independent psychiatrist at the Kenyatta National Hospital to establish the same.<\/p>\n<p>The matter is set to be mentioned on on March 12, 2021.<\/p>\n<div class=\"article-ad article-ad-3\">\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-1507752217570-0\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Separately, Sonko is also facing\u00a0graft related charges in which he was accused of demanding a Ksh10 million bribe from Web Tribe Limited to help process payments.<\/p>\n<p>Sonko is also accused of conspiring with\u00a0business people and senior county government officials to embezzle more than Ksh300 million public money.<\/p>\n<article data-align=\"center\">\n<div><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.kenyans.co.ke\/files\/styles\/article_inner_mobile\/public\/images\/media\/Sonko-court-730x414.jpeg?itok=i31H24Ll\" alt=\"Mike Sonko in a court session on Thursday, March 4 accompanied by a medical officer\" width=\"470\" height=\"267\" \/><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<\/article>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>AfricaPress-Kenya: Former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko has finally been released after\u00a0nearly a month behind bars.
