AfricaPress-Kenya:<\/strong> A Nairobi court has ruled that the former Nairobi governor Mike Mbuvi Sonko is fit to stand trial. The ruling was made after Sonko’s medical report were availed to the court to enable it reach a determination on the matter.<\/p>\n

In a ruling on Monday, March 22,\u00a0Nairobi Magistrate Peter Ooko noted that he had carefully\u00a0studied the medical report\u00a0from Kenyatta National Hospital before arriving to the decision.<\/p>\n

The magistrate revealed that Sonko was of sound mind according to the report, and that his mental health and speech are quite normal.<\/p>\n

Ooko further stated that the former county boss should be ready to show up in court in person on Monday, March 29, 2021 for the next hearing of his case.<\/p>\n

Sonko was receiving treatment\u00a0for an alleged bipolar condition, with his bed rest set to end on Friday, March 26, 2021. The magistrate, however, observed that the alleged condition did not bar him from carrying out his daily duties.<\/p>\n

Ooko made the ruling in a case where lawyers representing the embattled politicians had filed a suit claiming that he (Sonko) was unfit to stand trial.<\/p>\n

Chief Magistrate Douglas Ogoti had, on Monday, March 15,\u00a0noted that former the\u00a0former Nairobi governor\u00a0was attended to by four doctors earlier on February 19, and who participated in writing his medical report and appended their signatures to the report.<\/p>\n

It was pointed out that the medical reports presented to the court had contradicted those of\u00a0Kenyatta National Hospital.<\/p>\n

Sonko is facing numerous court cases including terror charges where he is accused of financing terror activities and recruiting individuals to take part in terror activities.<\/p>\n

\u201cOn or before January 1, 2021, at an unknown place within the Republic of Kenya, you (Mike Sonko) jointly with others not before Court knowingly recruited unknown persons to commit or participate in the commission of a terrorist act in contravention of the said Act,\u201d read the charge sheet in part.<\/p>\n

Separately, Sonko is also facing\u00a0graft related charges in which he was accused of demanding Ksh10 million bribe from Web Tribe Limited to help process payments.<\/p>\n

The former governor is also accused of conspiring with\u00a0business people and senior county government officials to embezzle more than Ksh300 million public money.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
