{"id":24717,"date":"2021-03-24T19:09:29","date_gmt":"2021-03-24T19:09:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/kenya\/?p=24717"},"modified":"2021-03-24T19:09:29","modified_gmt":"2021-03-24T19:09:29","slug":"nms-to-convert-popular-bus-station-into-multi-storey-underground-parking","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/kenya\/community\/nms-to-convert-popular-bus-station-into-multi-storey-underground-parking","title":{"rendered":"NMS to Convert Popular Bus Station Into Multi-storey Underground Parking"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>AfricaPress-Kenya:<\/strong> Nairobi Metropolitan Services Director General Mohammed Badi has revealed plans to convert two properties in Nairobi into multi-storey underground parking centres.<\/p>\n<p>The first underground parking site will be at the Sunken Park in the CBD, and the other at the\u00a0famous Machakos Bus Station.<\/p>\n<p>The sunken park is the open space just next to the Aga Khan walk, which already serves as a parking bay for more than 200 cars.<\/p>\n<p>NMS has acknowledged that city motorists suffer an acute shortage of spaces to park their cars.<\/p>\n<article data-align=\"center\">\n<div><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.kenyans.co.ke\/files\/styles\/article_inner_mobile\/public\/images\/media\/Sunken%20carpak%20in%20Nairobi.jpg?itok=w6DLlfm6\" alt=\"Sunken car park in Nairobi CBD located between Reinsurance Plaza and Bima House\" width=\"470\" height=\"353\" \/><\/div>\n<div>Sunken car park in Nairobi CBD located between Reinsurance Plaza and Bima House<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<\/article>\n<p>\u201cWe are in the process of developing underground parking at Sunken Park and eventually Machakos Bus Park will be turned into an underground parking area,\u201d said Major General Badi.<\/p>\n<p>NMS will be using the\u00a0underground parking space at Holy Family Basilica as a benchmark for its own construction.<\/p>\n<p>Holy Family Minor Basilica has a parking capacity of 516 slots, split into four levels all of which are underground.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have seen it is affordable, and we are now going to ensure that there\u2019s enough underground parking for Nairobi residents,\u201d said the Major General.<\/p>\n<p>Once completed, drivers will pay\u00a0hourly rates to access the parking spots\u00a0which will be operated digitally.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou will come, pay through mobile money, leave your car there and it will be parked for you on whichever floor of that building,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>Multi-storey parking centres are an effective use of space such as Holy Family Basilica which could only manage 120 cars before.<\/p>\n<p>NMS also plans to convert parking street parking bays into transport corridors to accommodate pedestrians and cyclists.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>AfricaPress-Kenya: Nairobi Metropolitan Services Director General Mohammed Badi has revealed plans to convert two properties in Nairobi into multi-storey underground parking centres.
