If they will continue to destroy property like this, we will catch up with them,&#8221; he stated.<\/p>\n<p>During the raid, the police allegedly confiscated some of the metals believed to have been vandalised from Makupa Bridge.<\/p>\n<article data-align=\"center\">\n<div><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.kenyans.co.ke\/files\/styles\/article_inner_mobile\/public\/images\/media\/A%20bridge%20along%20Makupa%20Causeway%20connecting%20Mombasa%20Island%20and%20Kenyan%20inland.jpg?itok=mCpcBO7w\" alt=\"A bridge along Makupa Causeway connecting Mombasa Island and Kenyan inland\" width=\"470\" height=\"315\" \/><\/div>\n<div>A bridge along Makupa Causeway connecting Mombasa Island and Kenyan inland<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<\/article>\n<p>The police further noted that the two suspects were in the\u00a0scrap metal business for a long time, and are believed to be working in cahoots with a syndicate that has bigger connection in the business.<\/p>\n<p>The metals, which included rails and crude materials, were confiscated and would be used as exhibits in court.<\/p>\n<p>Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA)\u00a0Coast Deputy Director Howard Manyi applauded the officers noting that he hoped for a conviction of the suspects.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We believe that the security agents will do their job and are going to get to the bottom of the matter and get to apprehend the culprits. Also, get to secure a conviction in court,&#8221; stated Manyi.<\/p>\n<p>The arrests come just two weeks after KeNHA was forced to close down the bridge for two days after vandalism rendered it impassable.<\/p>\n<p>In a statement on March 16, the authority noted that this was done to\u00a0allow for repair works.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;All traffic shall be diverted to the Mombasa island-bound traffic carriageway to allow the necessary repair works.<\/p>\n<div class=\"article-ad article-ad-3\">\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-1507752217570-0\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>&#8220;We request motorists to exercise caution around the work areas and to comply with the proposed traffic management plan and directions given by traffic marshals,&#8221; the authority stated at the time.<\/p>\n<p>The 120 meters Makupa causeway structure between Tudor and Port Reitz creeks was built in the 1920\u2019s by the British colonial government.<\/p>\n<p>The government is planning to demolish the bridge altogether to pave way for the construction of\u00a0a new dual carriage bridge at a cost of Ksh 4.5 billion.<\/p>\n<p>Part of the reason for its planned demolition is because it has reportedly been interfering with the natural oceanic waves, the free flow of\u00a0oxygen in the water\u00a0and has also been a cause of damage to fish breeding grounds and causing\u00a0pollution.<\/p>\n<p>President Uhuru Kenyatta commissioned the construction of\u00a0Makupa dual carriage bridge\u00a0in December 2020.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>AfricaPress-Kenya: Police officers, on Sunday, April 4, raided a shop in Mombasa&#8217;s CBD and arrested two businessmen suspected of\u00a0vandalising a bridge used by motor vehicles.
