{"id":25457,"date":"2021-04-06T20:09:57","date_gmt":"2021-04-06T20:09:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/kenya\/?p=25457"},"modified":"2021-04-06T20:09:57","modified_gmt":"2021-04-06T20:09:57","slug":"govt-moves-to-free-arvs-stuck-in-mombasa","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/kenya\/policy\/govt-moves-to-free-arvs-stuck-in-mombasa","title":{"rendered":"Govt Moves to Free ARVs Stuck in Mombasa"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>AfricaPress-Kenya:<\/strong> The Ministry of Health on Tuesday, April 6 approved a Ksh90 million\u00a0tax exemption on anti-retroviral drugs (ARVs)\u00a0that was stuck at the port of Mombasa.<\/p>\n<p>The drugs were donated by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and had arrived in Kenya on January 18, 2021.<\/p>\n<p>Following their arrival, the government taxed the donor Ksh90 million import tax on the consignment which is valued at Ksh2.1 billion.<\/p>\n<p>The antiretroviral drugs were however not cleared for entry as the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) and USAID failed to agree on who should pay the taxes \u2013 or whether there should be any tax claim in the first place.<\/p>\n<article data-align=\"center\">\n<div><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.kenyans.co.ke\/files\/styles\/article_inner_mobile\/public\/images\/media\/Uhuru%20Kagwe.jpg?itok=adOlFuA6\" alt=\"a\" width=\"470\" height=\"235\" \/><\/div>\n<div>President Uhuru Kenyatta (right) with Health CS Mutahi Kagwe (left) during the biometric registration of the Universal Healthcare Coverage Programme (UHC) in Mombasa County on Saturday, October 30, 2020<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<\/article>\n<p>On Friday, April 2 Nyanza MPs led by Homa Bay Women Representative, Gladys Wanga asked President Uhuru Kenyatta to intervene so that Kenyans could\u00a0access the lifesaving drug.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are concerned for our people. We are concerned that we are going to have more deaths, probably more than they are dying of Covid-19,\u201d Wanga said.<\/p>\n<p>Due to the tax row, People Living with HIV and Aids (PLWHA) were forced to take reduced doses since county governments resorted to rationing doses to avoid running out.<\/p>\n<p>Treasury Cabinet Secretary, Ukur Yatani, while speaking to the Standard said that the approval to wave the tax followed a request by Ministry of Health CS, Mutahi Kagwe, who noted that 1.5 million Kenyans living with HIV depended on the drugs to boost their immunity.<\/p>\n<p>PLWHAs chairman, Erick Okioma said that facilities that lacked Nevirapine had shifted to giving children Zidovudine which caused diverse side effects,<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is unfortunate that PLWHAs suffer for lack of medicine,\u201d Okioma said.<\/p>\n<p>Hospitals also had shortage in the supply of\u00a0paediatric antiretroviral drugs and septrin.<\/p>\n<p>Statistics from the National Aids Control Council indicate that in 2020, at least 6,806 babies were born with HIV because their mothers did not take medication properly during pregnancy and birth.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>AfricaPress-Kenya: The Ministry of Health on Tuesday, April 6 approved a Ksh90 million\u00a0tax exemption on anti-retroviral drugs (ARVs)\u00a0that was stuck at the port of Mombasa.
