{"id":26398,"date":"2021-04-22T19:33:49","date_gmt":"2021-04-22T19:33:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/kenya\/?p=26398"},"modified":"2021-04-22T19:33:49","modified_gmt":"2021-04-22T19:33:49","slug":"kra-introduces-new-tax-on-cooking-gas","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/kenya\/community\/kra-introduces-new-tax-on-cooking-gas","title":{"rendered":"KRA Introduces New Tax on Cooking Gas"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>AfricaPress-Kenya:<\/strong> The Kenya Revenue Authority has confirmed that LPG gas has been removed from the list of zero-rated items.<\/p>\n<p>In a statement sent to\u00a0<em>bloombergtax.com<\/em>, the taxman said that a\u00a016% value-added tax\u00a0would be effective July 1, 2021.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe cannot at the moment, provide a reliable estimate on the revenue expected to be raised from the imposition of VAT on LPG,\u201d KRA added.<\/p>\n<article data-align=\"center\">\n<div><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.kenyans.co.ke\/files\/styles\/article_inner_mobile\/public\/images\/media\/KRA%20Boss%20James%20Githii%20Mburu%20gives%20an%20address%20during%20a%20past%20event.jpg?itok=tsk1XrZK\" alt=\"KRA Boss James Githii Mburu gives an address during a past event\" width=\"470\" height=\"264\" \/><\/div>\n<div>KRA Boss James Githii Mburu speaks at a conference in 2019<\/div>\n<div>TWITTER<\/div>\n<\/article>\n<p>The government has been looking on ways to\u00a0fill the budget deficits\u00a0using methods such as borrowing and\u00a0tightening the screws on tax collection.<\/p>\n<p>Unlike the fuel prices, which are adjusted on the 15th of every month, and stay in place for one month, Kenya does not control cooking gas prices.<\/p>\n<p>The introduction of the VAT is expected to result in increased prices, causing a further dent in Kenyan households.<\/p>\n<p>The move was initially supposed to be introduced in 2020 but in light of the pandemic, the\u00a0government delayed the commencement date\u00a0by a year.<\/p>\n<p>Both the National Assembly and National Treasury were in consensus that the timing would have caused more problems for Kenyans who were grappling with job losses and reduced income.<\/p>\n<p>The proposals contained in the Finance Bill 2020 mean that the cost of 13-kilogram cooking gas may shoot up by more than Ksh300.<\/p>\n<p>Kenyan households have been enjoying low cooking gas rates since June 2016, when the Treasury abolished the VAT on LPG gas.<\/p>\n<p>The move was meant to encourage more Kenyans to adopt clean energy and discourage the use of paraffin and charcoal.<\/p>\n<p>According to data from the Energy Regulatory Authority, 28 percent of urban households use LPG for cooking compared with kerosene (29 percent) and charcoal (22 percent).<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>AfricaPress-Kenya: The Kenya Revenue Authority has confirmed that LPG gas has been removed from the list of zero-rated items.
