{"id":26418,"date":"2021-04-23T16:31:25","date_gmt":"2021-04-23T16:31:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/kenya\/?p=26418"},"modified":"2021-04-23T16:00:36","modified_gmt":"2021-04-23T16:00:36","slug":"bobi-wine-hit-with-ksh-10m-tax-for-kenyan-car","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/kenya\/all-news\/bobi-wine-hit-with-ksh-10m-tax-for-kenyan-car","title":{"rendered":"Bobi Wine Hit With Ksh 10M Tax for Kenyan Car"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: #ff6600\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/\">Africa-Press<\/a> &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/kenya\">Kenya<\/a>. <\/strong><\/span>Former Ugandan presidential candidate Robert Kyagulanyi aka Bobi Wine has been directed to remit USh 337 million (Ksh 10 million) to Uganda Revenue Authority (URA) for a bullet-proof vehicle he acquired from a Kenyan businessman.<\/p>\n<p>Bobi Wine had acquired the vehicle during the contested polls where he claimed his life was in danger.<\/p>\n<p>In a letter to Bobi Wine, URA stated that the adjustments in the vehicle were not disclosed during the initial inspection.<\/p>\n<p>The vehicle had been valued at Ksh4.7 million but a new valuation by URA placed it at $166,700 (Ksh18 million).<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Please advise your client (Bobi) to liaise with the office of the Assistant Commissioner Enforcement who by copy hereof, is requested to facilitate payment of due taxes and release of your client\u2019s vehicle accordingly,&#8221; the URA stated in a letter to the politician&#8217;s lawyers.<\/p>\n<p>Mombasa businessman Fauz Khalid facilitated the delivery of the vehicle which has since been a source of controversy.<\/p>\n<p>The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) website showed that Khalid was the registered owner of the luxurious car. The vehicle&#8217;s ownership was later changed to the Ugandan politician.<\/p>\n<p>The vehicle drew the attention of Ugandan Authorities who, upon further inspection, indicated that the vehicle was erroneously cleared. They sought to find out how the politician undervalued the cost of the car.<\/p>\n<p>According to the taxman, A new Toyota Land cruiser costs between Ksh 8 million and Ksh 14 million while an armored one can cost up to Ksh 45 million depending on the features.<\/p>\n<p>Bobi Wine indicated that he had acquired the vehicle through donations from his diaspora supporters.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;A few weeks ago, these comrades surprised me when they informed me that they had succeeded in raising enough money for the vehicle and here it is. I can&#8217;t thank you enough,&#8221; Wine wrote on his social media account &#8211; a post that he later pulled down.<\/p>\n<p>A High Court in Kampala has earlier dismissed an application by Bobi Wine seeking to block tax re-evaluation of the vehicle.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Africa-Press &#8211; Kenya.
