Africa-Press<\/a> – Kenya<\/a>. <\/strong><\/span>Nyeri County government has transformed a dumpsite that had been an eyesore for residents into a bus terminus and industrial complex.<\/p>\n

The project, which is estimated to have cost Ksh600 million, commenced in 2019 after the administration identified the Asian Quarters dumpsite for rehabilitation.<\/p>\n

When the project commenced, there were reservations from the National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) over where the garbage would be transferred to.<\/p>\n

At the time, NEMA County Director Stephen Njoka stated that they had received reports that the county government was dumping garbage in the Githwariga River.<\/p>\n

In response, the County Roads and Infrastructure Executive Muthui Kariuki refuted claims of dumping waste into the river.<\/p>\n

“We are managing the waste dumped at this location for years and are therefore reclaiming this piece of land and protecting the residents and environment,” he insisted.<\/p>\n

The construction of the bus park was funded by the World Bank under the Kenya Urban Support Programme (KUSP) in partnership with the County Government of Nyeri.<\/p>\n

The bus park is set to be one of the largest smart termini hubs in Kenya and is expected to create an affordable and efficient transport mechanism in the county.<\/p>\n

The terminus will have 800 business stalls, six restaurants, 240 matatu stages, taxi bays, TukTuk bays, 98 booking bays, 51 lorry bays, 94 passenger waiting bays, and ticket offices.<\/p>\n

Other amenities will include a fire sub-station, a police post, a power sub-station, a garage, five sanitation blocks, an open-air market, shops, a block of offices, and an ICT hub.<\/p>\n

Governor Kahiga has termed the multi-million project as transformational noting that it would bring about an economic turnaround and progression for the people of Nyeri, taking it back to its lost glory as an ideal place to live and work in for generations to come.<\/p>\n
