{"id":27885,"date":"2021-05-17T17:59:07","date_gmt":"2021-05-17T17:59:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/kenya\/?p=27885"},"modified":"2021-05-17T17:59:07","modified_gmt":"2021-05-17T17:59:07","slug":"govt-cracks-down-on-wealthy-kenyans-after-imf-pressure","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/kenya\/economy\/govt-cracks-down-on-wealthy-kenyans-after-imf-pressure","title":{"rendered":"Govt Cracks Down on Wealthy Kenyans After IMF Pressure"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>AfricaPress-Kenya:<\/strong> The Ministry of Treasury has announced plans to apply pressure on rich Kenyans as part of guarantee to recover International Monetary Fund (IMF) loan.<\/p>\n<p>According to a report by\u00a0<em>Business Daily<\/em>\u00a0on Monday, May 17, Treasury was preparing to institute travel bans and\u00a0deregister the Personal Identification Numbers\u00a0(PINs) of tax cheats.<\/p>\n<p>The report further indicated that Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) had earmarked a number of individuals who are said to owe the organisation as much as Ksh260 billion.<\/p>\n<p>Among individuals in the target bracket are\u00a0doctors,\u00a0real estate investors, and lawyers who are self-employed.<\/p>\n<article data-align=\"center\">\n<div><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.kenyans.co.ke\/files\/styles\/article_inner_mobile\/public\/images\/media\/KRA%20Boss%20James%20Githii%20Mburu%20gives%20an%20address%20during%20a%20past%20event.jpg?itok=tsk1XrZK\" alt=\"KRA Boss James Githii Mburu gives an address during a past event\" width=\"470\" height=\"264\" \/><\/div>\n<div>KRA Boss James Githii Mburu speaks at a conference in 2019<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<\/article>\n<p>In a letter from Treasury, business and property owners were also listed as the top target in KRA&#8217;s new plan to raise revenue\u00a0for the new financial year 2021\/22.<\/p>\n<p>It is estimated that 50% of the money is expected to be channelled towards the development budget.<\/p>\n<p>The crackdown, according to the publication, will get in full force in July 2021.<\/p>\n<p>The development comes after Kenyans expressed uproar against IMF for approving a\u00a0Ksh257\u00a0billion loan facility for the country despite high corruption levels.<\/p>\n<p>The loan will be given in phases over\u00a0three years and reviews will also be conducted to ensure compliance.<\/p>\n<p>As part of the guarantee to repay the loan in time, the\u00a0\u00a0National Treasury committed\u00a0to increase\u00a0taxes\u00a0and reduce its wage bill. The state also increased the taxes in order to receive the loan.<\/p>\n<p>The taxes that are to be increased by KRA included the implementation of post-clearance audits, comprehensive audit of all exemptions, enhanced scanning and intelligence-led verification of cargo at the ports of entry to meet its targets.<\/p>\n<div class=\"article-ad article-ad-3\">\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-1507752217570-0\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>&#8220;We are implementing a number of revenue enhancement measures as we continue to leverage on technology to enhance efficiency in revenue collection.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;With enhanced operational efficiency, the Authority is optimistic that the landscape of revenue mobilisation and collection in this country will be completely changed,\u201d read a statement from KRA.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>AfricaPress-Kenya: The Ministry of Treasury has announced plans to apply pressure on rich Kenyans as part of guarantee to recover International Monetary Fund (IMF) loan.
