Africa-Press<\/a> – Kenya<\/a>. <\/strong><\/span>The Ministry of Public Service Youth and Gender Affairs on Friday, June 18, honoured Chief Justice Martha Koome with a thanksgiving luncheon.<\/p>\n

Koome made history when she was appointed and later sworn in as the first Kenyan woman Chief Justice.<\/p>\n

The luncheon was aimed to celebrate the historic appointment which marked an incredible milestone in the gender equality index.<\/p>\n

Some of the leaders who attended the ceremony included; Narc Kenya leader Martha Karua, Kirinyaga Governor Anne Waiguru and Jubilee Secretary General Raphael Tuju.<\/p>\n

Others included President of the Court of Appeal Judge Daniel Musinga, Senate speaker Kenneth Lusaka and Justice Njoki Ndung’u.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe shouldn\u2019t let anyone say there\u2019re no qualified women for any job in Kenya. We\u2019ve a responsibility to effectively contribute to nation building. Let\u2019s take our space and space is not given it\u2019s taken,” Karua stated.<\/p>\n

\u201cI’m a supporter of a strong Judiciary, which is where we all run to when things are not working. As the Senate we have at times also come to you for arbitration. May both the mighty and the lowly get justice under your watch,” Lusaka stated.<\/p>\n

Judge Musinga noted that Koome was a hardworking, innovative and a go-getter who consults widely but made her own independent decisions.<\/p>\n

On her part, Koome vowed to defend the independence of the Judiciary and the Constitution and to promote inter-dependence with other arms of the government.<\/p>\n

“I will promote inter-dependence with other arms of government. If you see me with other arms of government, we are discussing how to improve administration of justice,” he stated.<\/p>\n

Koome took over the role of Chief Justice at a time when the judiciary and the executive are experiencing frosty relations.<\/p>\n

Following her swearing in, the president appointed 34 judges and left out six that had been recommended to him by the Judicial Service Commission (JSC).<\/p>\n

Former Chief justices David Maraga and Willy Mutunga have since asked the president to appoint the judges.<\/p>\n

Kenyatta has, however, maintained that he will not gazette the names of the six.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
