Africa-Press<\/a> – Kenya<\/a>. <\/strong><\/span>Six police officers who were caught on CCTV breaking into a bar in Kayole will be charged with breaking into a building and stealing contrary to section 306 of the Penal Code.<\/p>\n

This is after the Director of Public Prosecutions Noordin Haji reviewed a file into the investigations and ordered for their arrest.<\/p>\n

An inspector of police who was also among the group from Soweto police station will face the law, according to the DPP.<\/p>\n

However, police had earlier claimed that the officers were on duty and wanted the bar closed claiming the joint was breaking Covid-19 guidelines issued by the Ministry of Health.<\/p>\n

But upon investigations, the DPP determined that the bar did not operate outside curfew hours. The DPP also noted that the officers were justified to enter the bar but they broke the law when they took money from the counter.<\/p>\n

The officer had negotiated with the owner of the pub and refunded the money that was stolen but the DPP dismissed the agreement noting that the case is of public interest.<\/p>\n

Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) and the Internal Affairs Unit (IAU) investigated the matter after the owner of the bar accused the cops of breaking the law.<\/p>\n

The owner of Mossy Tavern Bar and Restaurant, Moses Mwangi accused the police of stealing Ksh122,000 and other valuables.<\/p>\n

In the footage seen by Kenyans.co.ke, five officers were dressed in administrative police uniform whereas one was in regular police uniform. The latter was seen breaking down the bar\u2019s doors using metal rods.<\/p>\n

He then accessed the counter through the grill and began to remove crates of alcohol, handing them over to his colleagues.<\/p>\n

Inspector General of Police Hillary Mutyambai jumped into action after CCTV footage captured officers breaking into a bar.<\/p>\n

In a statement on Tuesday, March 9, the IG directed the Internal Affairs Unit to probe the incident which occurred at Mossy Tavern Bar and Restaurant in Soweto area, Nairobi County.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
