Africa-Press<\/a> – Kenya<\/a>. <\/strong><\/span>African 3,000m steeplechase champion Benjamin Kigen and Commonwealth silver medalist Abraham Kibiwott will carry the country’s flag in the water and hurdles race after qualifying from their respective heats at the ongoing Tokyo Olympics.<\/p>\n

Kigen clocked 8:10.80 to finish third behind Ethiopian Lamech Girma (8:09.83) and Japanese Miura Ryuji (8:09.92)who finished first and second respectively in a closely-contested race in heat 1.<\/p>\n

Kibiwott emerged tops in heat 2, clocking 8:12.25 ahead of Ethiopian Getnet Wale (8:12.55) and Italian Ahmed Abdelwahed (8:12.71) in second and third respectively.<\/p>\n

It was heartbreak, though, for Leonard Bett \u2014 the other Kenyan representative in the steeplechase \u2014 after he finished fifth in heat 3, timing 8:19.62.<\/p>\n

Moroccan Soufiane El Bakkali clocked 8:19.00 to clinch the heat whereas Finnish Topi Raitanen and Frenchman Alexis Phelut timed 8:19.17 and 8:19.36 in second and third respectively.<\/p>\n

In the women’s 800m, national 400m champion Mary Moraa will be the country’s sole representative in the semis after former world champion Eunice Sum and Emily Tuei both failed to qualify from their respective heats.<\/p>\n

Moraa put up a spirited sprint in the last lap of heat 4 to finish third in 2:01.66. American Raevyn Rodgers clocked 2:01.42 to win the heat whereas Briton Keely Hodgkinson finished second in 2:01.59.<\/p>\n

Sum finished sixth in heat, timing 2:03.00 in a race that claimed the scalp of world champion Hellen Nakaayi who finished fourth in 2:00.92.<\/p>\n

Jamaican Natoya Goule took top honours in a time of 1:59.83 ahead of Benin’s Noelie Yarigo (2:00.11) and Norwegian Hedda Hynne (2:00.76) in second and third respectively.<\/p>\n

In heat 6, Tuei could only muster an eighth-place finish after clocking 2:08.00. The race was won by Britain’s Jemma Reekie (1:59.97) while American Ajee Wilson (2:00.02) and China’s Chunyu Wang (2:00.05) came in second and third, respectively.<\/p>\n

Kenya will be hoping for its first medal this afternoon when national cross country champion Rodgers Kwemoi, world under-20 10,000m champion Rhonex Kipruto and Weldon Kipkirui line up for the men’s 10,000m final.<\/p>\n

Before then, world 5,000m champion Hellen Obiri, world 10,000m bronze medallist Agnes Tirop and former world cross country bronze medallist Lilian Kasait will be in action in the women’s 5,000m heats.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
