Africa-Press<\/a> – Kenya<\/a>. <\/strong><\/span>President Uhuru Kenyatta has mourned the death of decorated Major General George Agoi who played a pivotal role during the Nairobi Bomb Blast in 1998.<\/p>\n

In a statement to the family on Wednesday, August 4, the Head of State noted that the Agoi was a national hero who was patriotic to the country.<\/p>\n

The general played a pivotal role during the bomb blast where he is hailed by the international community for saving many lives.<\/p>\n

According to New African Magazine, Agoi was appointed by then President Daniel Moi to fill a vacuum in terms of disaster coordination and rescue operations.<\/p>\n

The mishap, at the time, had been created by a lapse in coordination efforts between the police and one of its arms – identified as the Directorate of Security Intelligence (DSI).<\/p>\n

When Agoi took over the position, he successfully led the rescue efforts to a point he was nicknamed ‘General Bomb Blast.’<\/p>\n

\u201cWith the passing away of Major General (Rtd) George Agoi, Kenya has lost a national hero and icon of humanitarian service.<\/p>\n

“As a country, we will forever remember and cherish the sterling work he did when he led the multi-agency response team during the 1998 Nairobi terrorist attack,” mourned Uhuru.<\/p>\n

After the rescue mission, Agoi was posted as Kenya’s Ambassador to Ethiopia for one year but his term was not extended.<\/p>\n

In a past interview with the Standard, Agoi believed that there was foul play in his dismissal noting that the state had turned down invitations for him to attend international seminars without his knowledge.<\/p>\n

“When my services in the military were terminated and subsequent appointment as an ambassador, I realised I was being pushed out of Government,” he noted at the time.<\/p>\n

He had been invited to Israel, US and South Africa to be a facilitator on disaster management.<\/p>\n

After retiring as a soldier, Agoi threw his hat in politics in 2007 but lost the Lugari Parliamentary Seat which he vied on Ford Kenya ticket.<\/p>\n

Over 200 people lost their lives in the blast.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
