Africa-Press<\/a> – Kenya<\/a>. <\/strong><\/span>Defending champion Baldev Chager says he can see potential with the VW Polo R5 after testing the car he will drive for the second time in the KCB Machakos Rally this Sunday.<\/p>\n

The \u2018Flying Singh\u2019 who has previously sat on Group ‘N’ and R4 Mitsubishi Evolution X cars, drove the VW Polo R5 on a gravel performance test and sounded quite enthusiastic about it.<\/p>\n

He says the test drive was key in assessing which areas of the car needed immediate focus after his initial run in Voi Rally that saw him finish second overall position behind winner Karan Patel.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe had a bit of a test last weekend; did a few kilometers and I feel I\u2019m getting a bit settled with the car compared to how we were in Voi when we first drove it.<\/p>\n

“So let\u2019s see how the route is in Machakos and we will take it from there. After the recce on Saturday, we will see how best to perfect our pace-notes but we will take it as it comes,\u201d narrated Chager, who will be partnering with his long standing championship winning co-driver Ravi Soni.<\/p>\n

The multiple Kenya and Safari champion termed his \u2018fast and furious\u2019 test activity \u201can interesting challenge\u201d adding that there\u2019s still amazing potential with the car previously driven by the Kabras Sugar Racing ace and teammate Onkar Rai.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s hardly a month since he first piloted the VW Polo R5, but Chager is already savouring great racing experience in the contraption Onkar powered to WRC3 victory during the Safari on June 27. Chager explained that anything new takes some time to get used to.<\/p>\n

\u201cEven the EVO-X, which we have driven for many years, there is always a little bit more we can always find in it. So with the Polo project being a fresh start, it\u2019s going to take some time before we are closer to 90 percent of the car\u2019s potential. Right now, we are just driving it to 50 or 60 percent of its potential,\u201d Chager said.<\/p>\n

He said as much as polo looks like a normal car, it is custom-made rally car. The R4 Evolution X, which he has previously driven, is a production car with lots of standard suspension parts hence the travel and gear ratios and the engine are all very production- based.<\/p>\n

Chager continued: \u201cSo getting used to the Polo, how it takes the rough, how it accelerates and how it brakes; the characteristics of this car are completely different. It\u2019s just a matter of getting used to it, but then again it\u2019s much easier to drive- to be honest and also very aggressive so there is a technique that we are still trying to perfect.\u201d<\/p>\n

Chager added: \u201cWe are returning to Lisa Farm where we have had good and bad rallies too. We have won, and had an engine blow out in one of the rallies there. We also had one which was really wet and we\u2019re first on the road.\u201d<\/p>\n

Chager\u2019s title defence this season has entailed some ups and downs but the leading Sikh driver in the country is determined to soldier on.<\/p>\n

\u201cFirst rally in Nakuru we won. The second one which was the ARC Equator Rally, we didn\u2019t do too well. We actually broke down on Day One but under the \u201cSuper Rally\u201d rule we restarted on the last day and salvaged some KNRC points in the process.<\/p>\n

Third KNRC was the WRC Safari in which again we lost a whole day and finished18th.<\/p>\n

The last rally in Voi, we lost a little bit of time trying to get used to the polo and also got stuck on a sisal stump, but still came second. Now we have four events to go, so let\u2019s see how it goes for us,\u201d Chager said.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
