{"id":34558,"date":"2021-08-30T17:15:46","date_gmt":"2021-08-30T17:15:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/kenya\/?p=34558"},"modified":"2021-08-30T15:14:59","modified_gmt":"2021-08-30T15:14:59","slug":"ponting-lends-support-to-embattled-australia-coach-langer","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/kenya\/all-news\/ponting-lends-support-to-embattled-australia-coach-langer","title":{"rendered":"Ponting lends support to embattled Australia coach Langer"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: #ff6600\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/\">Africa-Press<\/a> &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/kenya\">Kenya<\/a>. <\/strong><\/span>Former captain Ricky Ponting has lent his support to ex-team mate Justin Langer as the embattled coach attempts to weather a challenging period at the helm of Australian cricket.<\/p>\n<p>Langer has come under scrutiny amid media reports players have tired of his intense coaching style after disappointing results on recent limited-overs tours of the West Indies and Bangladesh.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know there\u2019s been a lot of negativity the last few weeks, I really felt for Justin, I rang Justin a few times,\u201d Ponting, who captained Australia from 2004 to 2008, told 2GB radio.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey just got back from that tough tour of the West Indies and then Bangladesh, and he was locked up in his hotel room in Adelaide, and he was sort of copping it left, right and centre. \u201cMe and a lot of his close friends have reached out to him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Test captain Tim Paine and other senior players have held talks with Langer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs I made really clear to Justin, when you\u2019re in that position in Australian sport, whether you\u2019re a high-profile coach or a captain of a national team, if you\u2019re not getting the results then you\u2019ve got to expect the negativity,\u201d Ponting said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you wind the clock back not even 12 months ago, the Australian team were the number one-ranked test team and T20 team in the world, we know all the talent is there.\u201d Langer said on Sunday that the talks had been beneficial. \u201cWe all got a lot off our chests,\u201d he told the Western Australian. \u201cI think we are all in a better place now.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen you win, everyone is happy and gets on with things but when you are losing, that is when the finger-pointing starts and people look for excuses,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have had a rough trot in recent times but&#8230;.get back to winning and you won\u2019t hear about anything else.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Africa-Press &#8211; Kenya.
