{"id":36092,"date":"2021-09-28T17:03:01","date_gmt":"2021-09-28T17:03:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/kenya\/?p=36092"},"modified":"2021-09-28T15:24:13","modified_gmt":"2021-09-28T15:24:13","slug":"coaches-cast-doubt-over-wpl-unified-league-format","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/kenya\/all-news\/coaches-cast-doubt-over-wpl-unified-league-format","title":{"rendered":"Coaches cast doubt over WPL unified league format"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: #ff6600\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/\">Africa-Press<\/a> &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/kenya\">Kenya<\/a>. <\/strong><\/span>The Kenya Women\u2019s Premier League will revert back to the unified league format only a season after adopting zonal system.<\/p>\n<p>However, stakeholders want a number of things put in place if the new format is to work.<\/p>\n<p>With the 2021-2022 season set for October 3o kickoff, stakeholders want Football Kenya Federation to address especially issues to do with funding to void the past failures.<\/p>\n<p>Kisumu All Starlets team manager, Beryl Oketch said as much as the league will be competitive in the combined setup, FKF must honour their cash pledge in full for smooth operation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLet the federation honour their pledges to pay the full grants if the format is to work. For example, each club was to get Sh400,000 last season but the federation only managed half of that,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf the situation doesn\u2019t change, we are staring at another disaster with clubs dishing out walkovers at will. The likes of Makolanders and Eldoret Falcons were pioneers of this league but were relegated with lack of funding as the main contributor,\u201d she noted.<\/p>\n<p>Six teams (three from each zone) were relegated last season with Bunyore Starlets and Kangemi Ladies gaining promotion to the 12-team league.<\/p>\n<p>According to Kayole Starlets coach Joshua Sakwa, the only way to solve the financial quagmire bedevilling clubs is for the federation to ensure there\u2019s a sponsor on board.<\/p>\n<p>The women\u2019s league has not had a sponsor and FKF\u2019s decision to go back to the old format last season was to help cut costs.<\/p>\n<p>Kangemi Ladies gaffer, Joseph Orao Odhiambo said some teams will be forced to take few players to their away matches in order to cut costs. This, he believes will dampen the spirit of players and reduce the league\u2019s fan-fare.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Africa-Press &#8211; Kenya.
