{"id":38364,"date":"2021-11-01T14:54:59","date_gmt":"2021-11-01T14:54:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/kenya\/?p=38364"},"modified":"2021-11-01T13:49:10","modified_gmt":"2021-11-01T13:49:10","slug":"list-of-14-maize-flours-declared-harmful-by-govt","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/kenya\/all-news\/list-of-14-maize-flours-declared-harmful-by-govt","title":{"rendered":"List of 14 Maize Flours Declared Harmful by Govt"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: #ff6600\"><strong>Africa-Press &#8211; Kenya. <\/strong><\/span>The Kenya Bureau of Standards (KEBS) has flagged 14 maize flour brands that it deemed unfit for human consumption.<\/p>\n<p>According to the Bureau, the manufacturers of the 14 brands did not comply with the required standards.<\/p>\n<p>Among those flagged include Ndovu maize flour, Prestige sifted maize, sima tamu, range corn, top white, diamond sifted maize, Bel&#8217;s organic, winnies ugali afya, family.<\/p>\n<p>Others are Jasiri sifted maize, Jema sifted maize, Mugambo sifted maize, Jibe maize flour and Jodari.<\/p>\n<p>KEBS, in a bid to ensure quality, has asked all retailers selling the flagged brands to remove them from the shelves.<\/p>\n<p>The standards body has also issued a warning to the millers to comply with the set standards for the brands that it is yet to test before they are put up for sale.<\/p>\n<p>KEBS noted that the move shouldn&#8217;t be considered as a total ban but an action aimed at giving the millers a chance to take corrective action and ensure quality products are made available for consumers.<\/p>\n<p>The country has in the past grappled with cases of substandard maize flour brands being brought into the limelight. The major concern is due to the high levels of aflatoxin- toxins produced by certain fungi that are found on agricultural crops. High levels of aflatoxin leads to acute poisoning due to constant damaging of the liver.<\/p>\n<p>The World Health Organisation (WHO), in a past study, estimated that about 25 percent of food produced globally is destroyed yearly due to dangerous levels of aflatoxin.<\/p>\n<p>Other crops affected by the toxins are rice, sorghum, millet, wheat, cassava, nuts, groundnuts, cotton seeds, sunflower and coconut.<\/p>\n<p><strong>For More News And Analysis About <a href=\"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/kenya\">Kenya<\/a> Follow <a href=\"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/\">Africa-Press<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Africa-Press &#8211; Kenya.
