Africa-Press – Kenya. <\/strong><\/span>After winning his maiden Los Angeles Marathon title, John Korir now wants to follow in his brother’s, Wesley, footsteps by successfully defending his crown in 2022.<\/p>\n

Wesley timed 2:08:24 to win in 2009 before clocking 2:09:19 to maintain his grip on the title.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen I won, my brother told me I should maintain the family legacy now that he has retired. These were powerful words from him and I have to maintain the momentum,\u201d John, the second last born in the Korir family, said.<\/p>\n

The runner-up at the 2019 Ottawa Marathon timed 2:12:47 in the November 7 race to beat compatriot Edwin Kimutai (2:18:01) and Ethiopian Amanuel Mesei Tikue (2:18:17) in second and third respectively.<\/p>\n

His previous dive into the Los Angeles Marathon in 2019 had only yielded a second-place finish.<\/p>\n

He reflected on the unforgettable moment he cut the tape and exuded confidence of better things to come.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was the greatest moment in my career and has given me more impetus to work harder. It was good to keep the family name on the winners list of Los Angeles that has been dominated by my brother. With the help of good training and coaching, I will do great things,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

On the same day he was running in Los Angeles, Wesley, the 2012 Boston marathon champion was competing at the New York City Marathon to raise funds for Transcend Running Academy.<\/p>\n

He congratulated his young brother and confirmed handing over the family baton to him.<\/p>\n

“I want to take this opportunity to congratulate my little brother John Korir for winning the LA Marathon today. I can now officially hand over the mantle to you. It feels great to see history repeat itself,” Wesley said.<\/p>\n

John’s next race will be at the Houston Half Marathon in January next year.<\/p>\n
