Africa-Press – Kenya. <\/strong><\/span>Former Nairobi Governor Mike Mbuvi Sonko has been dealt a blow following Twitter’s decision to change its policies.<\/p>\n

Twitter has announced a new ban on sharing private and confidential content on the platform.<\/p>\n

This comes after the platform noted the rising concerns of misuse of media to harass, intimidate and reveal identities of private individuals.<\/p>\n

In an announcement made by the platform on Tuesday, November 30, Twitter noted that they will not allow the sharing of private media of individuals without their consent.<\/p>\n

Sonko has recently HIT headlines after publishing footage that had damning allegations against the Judiciary, Nairobi governor Ann Kananu and high court Judge Justice Chitembwe.<\/p>\n

Similarly, through a series of audio and video recordings the former Nairobi county Boss leaked private information about Governor Ann Kananu’s ally Merry Nkatha.<\/p>\n

According to Twitter,”Beginning today (Tuesday), we will not allow the sharing of private media, such as images or videos of private individuals without their consent.”<\/p>\n

“Publishing people’s private info is also prohibited under the policy, as is threatening or incentivizing others to do so,” the statement read.<\/p>\n

The new policies are aimed at curbing the misuse of media to harass private individuals, which disproportionately impacts women, activists, dissidents, and members of the minority communities.<\/p>\n

Twitter states that any person affected will need to report the content and prove that they are the persons targeted in order for the platform to take action.<\/p>\n

“To be clear, we require a first-person report or a report by an authorized representative of the photo or video in question. After we receive a report, that particular media will be reviewed before any enforcement action is taken,” the statement read.<\/p>\n

However, the new policy does not apply to journalists featuring individuals or public figures when the information accompanying the image or media adds value to the public discourse or is a matter of public interest.<\/p>\n

Additionally, Twitter noted that the new policy is not applicable in instances where users may share media of private individuals to help someone in need.<\/p>\n
