Africa-Press – Kenya. <\/strong><\/span>Maranda High School has for the second time running been closed indefinitely.<\/p>\n

The closure follows an attempted arson attack on one of the dormitories by the students.<\/p>\n

The administration on Wednesday, December 1, was forced to release the over 400 students after a series of threats to raze down the dormitory.<\/p>\n

The Form four students allegedly refused to write their mock examinations, prompting them to threaten to burn down the dormitory, arguing that they did not want to remain in school any longer.<\/p>\n

A teacher at the school stated that the students had issued threats, writing them on toilet walls, expressing their contempt over the mock exams.<\/p>\n

Speaking to a local radio station, the teacher confirmed that some students reported the matter that pushed the institution to take action.<\/p>\n

Siaya County Director of Education, Nelson Sifuna, confirmed that the internal mock examinations scheduled for Monday, December 6, had been scrapped off.<\/p>\n

The closure comes barely a month after the students returned to school after a fire razed down their dormitory on November 7.<\/p>\n

The arson attack reduced to ashes a dormitory that housed 200 students, destroying property worth millions.<\/p>\n

In response, Education Cabinet Secretary, Prof George Magoha, on Monday, November 8, warned that students linked to fire incidents in schools will be blocked from joining public schools.<\/p>\n

Speaking during a tour of schools in Machakos County, the CS noted that the directive would help curb indiscipline cases in these learning institutions.<\/p>\n

He further stated that the act of setting school premises on fire was primitive, noting that schools would not be shut down due to increased indiscipline cases.<\/p>\n

“It looks mundane and juvenile to burn a building. It is stupid, it’s primitive and must stop. We are not closing any schools,” stated the CS.<\/p>\n
