Africa-Press – Kenya. <\/strong><\/span>Two people have been confirmed dead after a stone quarry they were working at caved in on Monday night at Oyuer village in Rachuonyo North, Homa Bay.<\/p>\n

The two, Tobias Ombija and George Otieno Nyadiero, died on the spot while crushing stones inside the 10 feet cave.<\/p>\n

Kanyipir Location Chief, Israel Okoth Amadi, confirmed the incident.<\/p>\n

He noted that the quarry was being operated illegally without approval from the National Environmental Management Authority (NEMA).<\/p>\n

Amadi also asked residents to explore alternative sources of livelihood such as farming to avert similar incidents in the future.<\/p>\n

The incident in Homa Bay comes barely a fortnight after yet another in Abimbo Village in Siaya County, where a gold mine caved in.<\/p>\n

Several miners have since been rescued with a search still ongoing for one Tom Okwach, who is yet to be traced.<\/p>\n

Search operations are still on 20 days later, with the rescue team bemoaning delays in the provision of an excavator to aid the process.<\/p>\n

The incident claimed one life.<\/p>\n

One person also lost his life when a gold mine in Waringa Village, in Bondo Sub-County, Siaya County collapsed.<\/p>\n

The surge in the number of gold mines caving in at the expense of miners\u2019 lives has been blamed on increased rainfall witnessed in the region.<\/p>\n

The bodies of the deceased have, in the meantime, been moved to the Kendu Bay Adventist Hospital mortuary as their families kick off burial plans.<\/p>\n
