Africa-Press – Kenya. <\/strong><\/span>ELEVEN-year-old tennis luminary, Selline Ahoya, is among five youngsters shortlisted for the Most Promising Girl accolade at the 2021 Sports Personality of the Year Awards, scheduled for January 19 at Bukhungu Stadium in Kakamega County.<\/p>\n

The St. Bridget Catholic Primary School pupil currently tops the Under-12 national rankings in the sport.<\/p>\n

She recently stole the headlines after romping into the finals of the under 14 Confederation of African Tennis in June before bagging the Under- 12 Tennis Kenya Junior challenge held in September.<\/p>\n

Ahoya then maintained her splendid run in October, easily cruising to the winner’s podium during the Under 12 East Africa teams\u2019 competition in Kampala, Uganda where she bagged the overall title to secure a berth at the Tunisia Africa junior championship in November.<\/p>\n

The lass, however, has a steep mountain to climb on her way to the winner’s podium at the gala, in her fierce battle with three track luminaries who flew the country’s flag at the World Under-20 Athletics Championships held at Kasarani in August, as well as a football prodigy.<\/p>\n

Among them is Purity Chepkirui who brought home the women\u2019s 1,500m title after a massive nine years. Chepkirui won the title in 4:16.07 to end Ethiopia\u2019s dominance, as her compatriot Winnie Jemutai clocked 4:18.99 for bronze.<\/p>\n

Prior to Chepkirui’s accomplishment, Olympic 1,500m champion Faith Chepng’etich was the last Kenyan to win the title during the 2012 Barcelona Games.<\/p>\n

Chepkirui also outpaced the pack to clinch the women’s Under-20 race during the National Cross Country Championships in February.<\/p>\n

Teresia Muthoni Gateri, who guided fellow countrywoman Zenah Jemutai to a 1-2 sweep as Kenya ended a long wait for women\u2019s victory in the 3,000m at the World Under-20 Championships, is also eyeing the Soya title.<\/p>\n

Muthoni triumphed in a personal best time of 13:20.37 as Jemutai took silver in 13:20.65. Muthoni\u2019s victory was the first by a Kenyan since Mercy Chebwogen\u2019s exploits in 2012 Barcelona, Spain.<\/p>\n

Another world under 20 champion who has been nominated for the award is Jackeline Chepkoech. Chepkoech destroyed the field to uphold Kenya\u2019s dominance in women\u2019s 3,000m steeplechase, winning the race in personal best of 9:27.40.<\/p>\n

She retained the title which compatriot Celliphine Chespol won at the 2016 Bydgoszcz and the 2018 Tampere games, both in championship records.<\/p>\n

Footballer Violet Nanjala of Vihiga Queens is also in contention for the gong. The 19-year-old was poached by Vihiga Queens from Trans Nzoia Falcons after topping the Zone ‘B’ Football Kenya Federation Women\u2019s Premier League with 21 goals \u2014 thanks to four hat-tricks.<\/p>\n

Nanjala scored four goals in the inaugural 2021 CAF Women’s Champions League Cecafa Qualifiers, netting all in one game against South Sudan\u2019s Yei Join Stars.<\/p>\n

The gala, which will be held in Western Kenya for the first time, is sponsored by the County Government of Kakamega, Lotto Foundation, CPF Financial Services, NSSF, and Safaricom.<\/p>\n
