Africa-Press – Kenya. <\/strong><\/span>Kenya Railways Corporation (KRC) has issued a clarification after widespread reports that it had altered its commuter rules.<\/p>\n

Over the festive season, the corporation’s Twitter account had advised travellers to ensure that they board the trains with minimal luggage. The tweet was, however, deleted shortly after without an explanation.<\/p>\n

In a statement released on Monday, December 27, Kenya Railways dispelled the reports noting that passengers were free to carry luggage of any size.<\/p>\n

The Corporation, however, noted that for passengers to travel in absolute comfort, smaller luggage was preferable.<\/p>\n

“Kenya Railways wishes to clarify that it has not issued any new directive regarding the size and weight of luggage that passengers can bring on board.<\/p>\n

“Whereas we encourage passengers to bring along luggage that they can easily and comfortably carry, and which can be loaded onboard through the passenger access, we have not put in place any new restrictions regarding the number, size and weight of items a passenger can carry as luggage,” read the statement signed by Philip Mainga, KRC Managing Director.<\/p>\n

For smaller luggage, the coaches have a top carrier just above the seats and a bit of luggage space under the seats.<\/p>\n

While travelling on the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR), passengers are permitted to carry their own meals but liquor beverages are not allowed.<\/p>\n

Earlier reports had claimed that Kenya Railways had limited the weight of luggage carried by passengers to 30 kilograms.<\/p>\n

The reports further claimed that the suitcases or bags used by individuals travelling should not exceed 160 centimetres in length or 200 centimetres in height.<\/p>\n

In line with the increased passenger traffic during the festive season, passengers were also advised to arrive at their respective termini at least one hour before the expected departure time.<\/p>\n
