{"id":4702,"date":"2020-03-22T14:36:30","date_gmt":"2020-03-22T14:36:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.com\/kenya\/?p=4702"},"modified":"2020-03-22T14:36:30","modified_gmt":"2020-03-22T14:36:30","slug":"kilifi-petty-offenders-freed-over-coronavirus","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/kenya\/community\/kilifi-petty-offenders-freed-over-coronavirus","title":{"rendered":"Kilifi petty offenders freed over coronavirus"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>AfricaPress-Kenya:<\/strong> The Judiciary in Malindi has adopted release of petty offenders as a way of de-congesting jails in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic.<\/p>\n<p>On Friday, Malindi Chief Magistrate Julie Oseko conducted a court session via video link where she released petty offenders and granted bail to others as a way of de-congesting the crowded Malindi Maximum GK Prison.<\/p>\n<p>Chief Justice David Maraga had last week announced a scale down of court activities as a precautionary measure to avoid jam at the courts.\u00a0\u201cICT is the way to go because it reduces costs, is very effective, reduces backlog and is easy to access and a lot of people are now asking for that,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>With two clerks and two prosecutors, Oseko heard and granted amnesty to several offenders.A probation officer helped in identifying those with lesser offences.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo far, we\u2019ve done about 95 files and we\u2019ve released some 30 people to decongest the prisons.
