Africa-Press – Kenya. <\/strong><\/span>Kenya Kwanza presidential running mate Rigathi Gachagua on Tuesday skipped a court appearance in a graft case to attend his brother\u2019s burial.<\/p>\n

Gachagua\u2019s brother, James Rerian, died on May 7, 2022, aged 78.<\/p>\n

In the case, Gachagua is accused of fraudulently obtaining Sh7.5 billion.<\/p>\n

The court on April 12 set May 17, 2022, as the mention date of the case where the prosecution and the defence were to battle out on the fixing of hearing dates of the case.<\/p>\n

The court had initially scheduled hearings to start on September 5, almost a month after the August 9 General Election but the magistrate declined the request.<\/p>\n

This was after the DPP asked then trial magistrate Roda Makungu to commence hearings in June.<\/p>\n

The case is now under principal magistrate Victor Wakhumile after Makungu recused herself following her promotion as the registrar for the Lands and Environment Court.<\/p>\n

She said the administrative role would limit her time as a magistrate.<\/p>\n

Gachagua is facing six counts of conspiracy to commit economic crimes.<\/p>\n

He was charged alongside William Mwangi, Anne Nduta, Julianne Jahenda, Samuel Murimi, Grace Wambui, Lawrence Kimaru, Irene Wambui and David Nguru.<\/p>\n

Gachagua was last Sunday unveiled by Kenya Kwanza presidential candidate William Ruto as his running mate.<\/p>\n

If the hearing is scheduled for a date before August 9 when the elections will be held, his time on the campaign trail will be severely limited as he is required to be physically present in court during hearings.<\/p>\n

Hearings sometimes start at 9 am and end at 4 pm.<\/p>\n
