AfricaPress-Kenya:<\/strong> Kakamega County has kicked off construction of the second phase of Bukhungu Stadium.<\/p>\n

Governor Wycliffe Oparanya said this phase will cost Sh2.5 billion.\u201cThe county spent Sh500 million to construct the first phase,\u201d he said.Mr Oparanya spoke to journalists after touring the stadium to assess its progress yesterday.<\/p>\n

Best facility<\/strong><\/p>\n

He said his dream was to make Bukhungu Stadium one of the best sporting facilities in the country and region at large.The Council of Governors chairman said the stadium will have a 30,000 sitting capacity and would meet international standards.<\/p>\n

\u201cFootball fans in the region who have been missing international football will have a reason to smile since the stadium will be able to host many games, both local and international,” said Oparanya.The governor assured football fans that construction of the stadium will be completed before the end of his second term.<\/p>\n

Oparanya directed Sport and Culture Executive Robert Makhanu to closely monitor the construction to ensure the contractor meets the set standards.Mr Makhanu said the second phase involves construction of a perimeter wall, terraces, roof, washrooms and offices.The first phase of the stadium has a magnificent VVIP room, dressing rooms, VIP stand, offices for county staff and a parking.<\/p>\n

Host matches<\/strong><\/p>\n

The stadium put Kakamega on the international map in 2017 after it was given a clean bill of health to host some matches of the Cecafa Senior Challenge Cup.<\/p>\n

It is the home ground of Kenya Premier League side Kakamega Homeboyz and National Super League\u2019s Vihiga Bullets owned by former Vihiga Governor Moses Akaranga.AFC Leopards have also been using the stadium as their alternative home ground.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
