AfricaPress-Kenya:<\/strong> Retired track star Usain Bolt showed he\u2019s still a few steps ahead when he posted an AFP picture of him outstripping his rivals at the Beijing Olympics with the cheeky caption: \u201csocial distancing\u201d.<\/p>\n

Bolt\u2019s post, featuring a picture by AFP photographer Nicolas Asfouri of the 2008 Olympics 100m final, blew up on social media, drawing more than half a million likes and 90,000 retweets.<\/p>\n

It showed the Jamaican crossing the finish line at the Bird\u2019s Nest stadium in a then-world record time of 9.69sec, glancing round from lane four as his despairing competitors trail two paces behind.<\/p>\n

\u201cSavage\u201d, commented one Twitter user, while New York Times journalist Christopher Clarey posted another picture of Bolt out in front on his own, captioned \u201cself isolation\u201d.<\/p>\n

Bolt\u2019s chest-thumping celebration in Beijing added to a legend that grew further when he won the 200m in another world-record time. He retired in 2017 with eight Olympic gold medals and the current 100m mark of 9.58sec, set in 2009.<\/p>\n

Bolt, 33, has been encouraging Jamaicans to self-isolate during the coronavirus pandemic, posting videos of himself exercising at home and juggling footballs with a friend. He also helped promote a major fundraiser, Telethon Jamaica.<\/p>\n

After retiring from athletics, Bolt, a Manchester United fan, attempted to launch a career in football, and had a trial with Australia\u2019s Central Coast Mariners before contract talks failed.<\/p>\n

Elsewhere, a buffalo racer in India whose blistering pace along a muddy field prompted comparisons to Olympic legend Usain Bolt has been beaten at his own game.<\/p>\n

Srinivas Gowda ran 142.5 metres in 13.62 seconds on January 31 behind two buffaloes, setting a record in the annual race known as Kambala in the southern state of Karnataka.<\/p>\n

This equated to running 100 metres in 9.55 seconds, compared with the retired Bolt\u2019s world record of 9.58 seconds, earning the construction worker fame and an invitation from the sports minister to take part in track trials.<\/p>\n

But according to local media, Nishant Shetty and his buffaloes have pipped Gowda, running 143 metres in 13.61 seconds. This is the equivalent of 9.51 seconds over 100 metres. Kambala is an annual festival in the farming belts of Karnataka during the winter when contestants sprint along waterlogged muddy fields holding a rope attached to two buffaloes.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
