Africa-Press – Kenya. <\/strong><\/span>At least 28 governors-elect will be sworn into office next week on Thursday following their gazettement.<\/p>\n

County secretaries of the selected counties gazetted the incoming county bosses vide notice Vol.CXXIV No.166 dated on August 19, 2022.<\/p>\n

The 28 counties are Kajiado, Kiambu, Makueni, Baringo, Kirinyaga, Samburu, Kisumu, Kitui, Marsabit, Taita Taveta, Laikipia, Wajir, Isiolo and Kwale.<\/p>\n

Others are Trans Nzoia, Tharaka Nithi, West Pokot, Elgeyo Marakwet , Uasin Gishu, Garissa, Turkana, Machakos, Mandera, Nyandarua, Vihiga , Kisii, Nandi and Migori.<\/p>\n

By law, all newly elected governors are supposed to be sworn in 10 days after being declared winners by the IEBC.<\/p>\n

The swearing-in is supposed to take place on the first Thursday after the lapse of the ten days.<\/p>\n

45 counties elected their governors in the August 9 polls. Mombasa and Kakamega governor elections were postponed.<\/p>\n

The law stipulates that the oath or affirmation shall take place not earlier than 10.00 am and not later than 2.00 pm.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Governor-elect shall, during the swearing-in ceremony, take and subscribe to the oath or affirmation of office as prescribed in the First Schedule section of the Assumption of the Office of Governor Act 2019,\u201d states the law states.<\/p>\n

Chief Justice Martha Koome has already appointed 47 judges who will preside over the swearing-in.<\/p>\n

The law states that the swearing-in of the governor-elect shall occur in a public ceremony before a High Court Judge.<\/p>\n

Some of the judges include: William Musyoka (Kisumu), Weldon Korir (Nakuru) and James Wakiaga (Nyeri), Lady Justices Aburili (Nairobi), Rachael Ngetich (Garissa, Dora Chepkwony (Kakamega), Lucy Njuguna, Justices George Dulu and David Majanja (Machakos)<\/p>\n

She said the exercise will take place immediately after the winners of county seats are gazetted by the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC).<\/p>\n

“The Assumption of Office of Governor Act, 2019 requires that upon election into the office of Governor and Deputy Governor, the Judiciary shall appoint judges to oversee the swearing-in of the Governor and Deputy Governor-elect in accordance with the Act. In that regard, I hereby appoint the judges as per the schedule attached herein to conduct the swearing-in ceremony upon election and gazettement by the IEBC,” Koome noted.<\/p>\n

Judiciary Chief Registrar Anne Amadi has already issued guidelines which will be used during the oath-taking ceremony.<\/p>\n

This is aimed at ensuring that there is no delay in new county chiefs getting to the office.<\/p>\n

It also gives room for a smooth transition, more so in counties, where governors have served their maximum two terms of 10 years as stipulated by the Constitution.<\/p>\n
