Africa-Press – Kenya. <\/strong><\/span>Motorists using the recently commissioned Eastern Bypass have been advised to strictly adhere to traffic rules when using it.<\/p>\n

The Kenya Urban Roads Authority said despite the road still being under construction, motorists should desist from driving on the wrong side of the road.<\/p>\n

The authority said U-turns and road signages have been provided to guide motorists as they drive along the entire road corridor.<\/p>\n

\u201cPlease note, that our enforcement team is on the ground to deal with anyone who violates the traffic rules,\u201d Kura said.<\/p>\n

The Silas Kinoti-led road agency noted that majority of accidents that have happened along the bypass are because of motorists driving on the wrong side instead of using the provided U-turns.<\/p>\n

Once complete, Kura will install street lights, road marking, and footbridges but until then they have urged motorists to cooperate as it endeavors to provide Enhanced Urban Mobility.<\/p>\n

On July 31, President Uhuru Kenyatta officially commissioned the 27.8 km Eastern Bypass which is the final ring road in Nairobi.<\/p>\n

The road has been expanded from a single 2-lane road to a dual 4-lane carriageway.<\/p>\n

The dualling of the bypass began in November 2020, after the signing of a contract between Kura and the China Communication Construction Company which will be completing the Sh12.5 billion project.<\/p>\n

The project is expected to ease traffic along the busy Eastern Bypass, which serves the eastern side of Nairobi and diverts traffic from the city centre.<\/p>\n

Dualling of the road was among 11 major infrastructure initiatives Kenya showcased to international investors during the Belt and Road forum in Beijing in May 2017.<\/p>\n

The Eastern Bypass connects Mombasa Road to Thika Super Highway at Kamakis, traversing through Embakasi, Utawala, Ruai and Ruiru towns, and has been expanded as part of sustained government efforts to decongest Nairobi.<\/p>\n
