Africa-Press – Kenya. <\/strong><\/span>Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission Vice Chairperson Juliana Cherera now says Chairman Wafula Chebukati did not consult them while making comments on the arrest of the three Venezuelans.<\/p>\n

Cherera said this in a response to the presidential election petition filed by Azimio leader Raila Odinga and his running mate Martha Karua.<\/p>\n

In an affidavit seen by the Star,<\/b> Cherera said Chebukati’s comment was solely done.<\/p>\n

“The chairperson did not consult the commission before issuing the statement and or engaging in a public spat with security agencies ostensibly on behalf of the commission,” she said.<\/p>\n

The three Venezuelans were arrested in July at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport but Chebukati defended them.<\/p>\n

Chebukati said they were “key personnel responsible for deployment and management of election technology infrastructure”.<\/p>\n

Chebukati expressed disappointment in the arrests saying their detention is tantamount to intimidation ahead of the August 9, polls.<\/p>\n

The three personnel, who are employees of Smartmatic International B.V., were put behind bars upon arrival at JKIA from Venezuela.<\/p>\n

“The brazen decision of the security authorities to arrest, detain and confine in a solitary hideout the three personnel without justification, is an exhibition of intimidation on hardworking persons who are only keen to deliver a robust technology infrastructure for conduct of a credible, secure and verifiable election,” Chebukati said .<\/p>\n
