Africa-Press – Kenya. <\/strong><\/span>Students from Olympic High School, Nairobi have emerged second runner-up at the just concluded Sahara Foundation competition.<\/p>\n

The competition, which was sponsored by the Sahara Foundation STEAM Regional competition, saw three teams from Nigeria, Kenya and Uganda compete in Lagos.<\/p>\n

Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics (STEAM) Program is aimed at giving young African inventors a platform to develop their creativity.<\/p>\n

The Kenya edition was held at Ihub in Nairobi, hosted by Asharami Synergy Kenya, a Sahara Group company.<\/p>\n

The Olympic students used Arduino, jumper wires, and passive infrared motion sensor in creating \u2018Ultrasonic Distance Sensor Alarm System\u2019 device.<\/p>\n

The learners produced the Sensor Alarm System that helps combat insecurity and promote energy efficiency.<\/p>\n

They explained that the device will help in reducing home and car burglaries in Kenya.<\/p>\n

The device is also designed to reduce energy consumption.<\/p>\n

“The inspiring presentations should lead you to explore and stretch your creativity towards building viable solutions to socio-economic challenges in Africa,” Country Manager, Asharami Synergy commended the Olympic High at the event.<\/p>\n

Adesanya commended the students for displaying a profound understanding of embedded systems and the ability to use human-centred design to create sustainable solutions to prevalent social problems.<\/p>\n

The STEAM competition featured 150 students who were given opportunity to access deep-dive classroom learning and practical forums.<\/p>\n

The Olympic High School team comprised of Vincent Mutua, Braxton Lumbasi, Joshua Mwilwatsi, Larryson Muthama, Linah Mideva, and Martin Ochola.<\/p>\n

Igbobi College, Lagos, Nigeria emerged overall winner with its \u2018Silent Digital Alarming Device\u2019.<\/p>\n

Team from St Peters, Kampala, Uganda emerged as first runner-up with its \u2018Plant Watering System\u2019 invention.<\/p>\n

In June, the foundation, hosted the Nigerian edition that saw the participation of Igbobi College, Yaba and Oshodi Junior High school, Lagos, compete to represent the nation in the regional Demo grand final event.<\/p>\n
