{"id":67091,"date":"2022-09-03T15:01:06","date_gmt":"2022-09-03T15:01:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/kenya\/all-news\/newbies-onjiko-boys-ototo-girls-win-nyanza-basketball-titles"},"modified":"2022-09-03T15:06:45","modified_gmt":"2022-09-03T15:06:45","slug":"newbies-onjiko-boys-ototo-girls-win-nyanza-basketball-titles","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/kenya\/all-news\/newbies-onjiko-boys-ototo-girls-win-nyanza-basketball-titles","title":{"rendered":"Newbies Onjiko Boys, Ototo Girls win Nyanza basketball titles"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: #ff6600\"><strong>Africa-Press &#8211; Kenya. <\/strong><\/span>Newcomers Onjiko School and Ototo are the new Nyanza secondary schools boy\u2019s and girl\u2019s basketball champions.<\/p>\n<p>Onjiko coached by the Principal, Joseph Were and his deputy Gordon Ogutu, dethroned 2019 champions Agoro Sare while Ototo beat 2019 winners Bar Chando as the curtain came down on the Nyanza secondary Schools term two games at Asumbi TTC on Saturday.<\/p>\n<p>In the boy\u2019s category, Onjiko inspired by captain Paul Ochieng, Kelvons Onkundi and Yien Matay beat Agoro Sare 82-51 to lift their first Nyanza region title.<\/p>\n<p>Onjiko started the game strongly winning the first quarter 24-7 and the second 17-10. In the third quarter, Agoro Sare increased the tempo but lost 22-19 while in the fourth quarter, Onjiko led 19-15<\/p>\n<p>In the semis, Onjiko overpowered Maranda School 89-33 while Agoro Sare saw off Nyanchwa 69-46.<\/p>\n<p>Nyanchwa Boys settled for the third position after narrowly beating Maranda School 61-60.<\/p>\n<p>Ototo School coached by the Principal and former basketball referee Clement Nyakinda beat Bar Chando 68-35 to lift the title on their first attempt. Mary Awino led the scoring chart with 26 points.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is something we have been working on for the last three years. It was a good tournament because we were the better side from day one,\u201d Nyakinda said.<\/p>\n<p>In girl\u2019s soccer, Kobala beat 2019 champions Nyakach Girls 1-0 to lift the title. Kobala shocked former champions Jera 1-0 in the semis with Nyakach beating Gekomoni 3-0.<\/p>\n<p>The boy\u2019s soccer final between Kisumu Day and Agoro Sare was moved to Kisii School due to fears of fans trouble after the first semi final between Kanga School and Agoro Sare was marred by violence.<\/p>\n<p>It was also moved to Kisii School. Kisumu Day beat a stubborn Gesabakwa 3-2 after extra time to qualify to the finals while Agoro Sare beat Kanga School 2-1.<\/p>\n<p>Kisumu Day narrowly beat Ringa Boys 1-0 to regain the boy\u2019s title.<\/p>\n<p>Kisumu Day qualified for the finals after an emphatic 6-0 win over Pe-Hill while Kanga beat debutants Nduru Boys 1-0 in the other semi final.<\/p>\n<p>Nyamira Girls coached by Eliakim Obondo defeated former champions Sinyolo 2-1 to also retain the title. Lorraine Awuor and Amanda Wamalwa were on target for Nyamira Girls while Lucy Akinyi pulled one back for Sinyolo.<\/p>\n<p>In the semis, Nyamira Girls beat debutants Anding\u2019o 4-1 as Sinyolo overcame Agenga 2-0. Obondo said their strategy worked for them.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur plan was to score two goals in the first quarter and it worked. We head back to school to prepare for the nationals,\u201d Obondo said.<\/p>\n<p>Manyatta edged out Rang\u2019ala 30-26 to win the boy\u2019s handball title while Kakrao edged out Miranga 28-18.<\/p>\n<p>In the boy\u2019s semis, Manyatta beat Nyamanga 27-25 as Rang\u2019ala edged Maseno School 28-23.<\/p>\n<p>Debutants Kakrao saw off Masosa 35-16 while Miranga beat Ndonyo 23-10.<\/p>\n<p>Kobala clinched the netball title in their 12th attempt. They beat 2019 champions Nyakach Girls 57-32 in the finals.<\/p>\n<p>In the semis, Kobala defeated Keberesi 35-12 while Nyakach defeated Oyugi Ogango 38-30 in the second semi finals.<\/p>\n<p>St Joseph\u2019s Kisumu bagged the boy\u2019s volleyball title after a 3-1 (25-20, 17-25, 25-23, 25-16) win over debutants Sagegi.<\/p>\n<p>The Saints beat God Bura 3-1 in the first semifinal as Sagegi overcame St Paul\u2019s Gekano High from Nyamira 3-0 in the other semi final.<\/p>\n<p>In the girl\u2019s category, debutants Nyakongo captained by Nivah Naliaka beat defending champions Nyakach Girls 3-2 (27-25, 23-25, 25-17, 22-25, 15-8) in a five set thriller to win the title.<\/p>\n<p>Nyakongo beat Kandiege 3-0 while Nyakach also had a straight sets win over Kisii County\u2019s Nyakembene.<\/p>\n<p><strong>For More News And Analysis About <a href=\"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/kenya\">Kenya<\/a> Follow <a href=\"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/\">Africa-Press<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Africa-Press &#8211; Kenya.
