Africa-Press – Kenya. <\/strong><\/span>The Central Organization of Trade Unions (Kenya) COTU has pledged to work with the new government.<\/p>\n

The union dismissed claims that there was a bad relationship between them and the government in the past as attributed to the general secretary of the Dock Workers Union.<\/p>\n

In a statement on Thursday, COTU deputy secretary general Benson Okwaro said the previous governments have always supported workers by advancing their rights and welfare.<\/p>\n

“The relationship between the government and trade unions has not only been explained clearly in the article (41) in the constitution and the five sets of labour law but also firmly anchored within the eight fundamental conventions of the International Labour Organization (ILO) that protects and promotes tripartite relations,” he said.<\/p>\n

He said that all former presidents have been attending the labour day celebrations because of the good relationship that co-exists between them.<\/p>\n

“The presidents have used the opportunity to better their relationship with trade unions and speak the plight of Kenyans,” he said.<\/p>\n

He said that President Uhuru Kenyatta adjusted the minimum wage by 12 per cent rise.<\/p>\n

Okwaro said that the adjustment by Uhuru is an indication that trade unions have worked closely with the government.<\/p>\n

He said that the accusations that a section of the trade unionists who want to visit the president-elect is false.<\/p>\n

Okwaro added that the COTU secretary general had congratulated the president-elect on behalf of the union.<\/p>\n

He said that the union will support the president-elect in delivering on his promises to Kenyans and workers.<\/p>\n

Okwaro urged workers to support Ruto as he runs the government for the next five years.<\/p>\n
