Africa-Press – Kenya. <\/strong><\/span>Chief Justice Martha Koome has gazetted judges and magistrates who will hear election petitions arising from the August 9 General Election.<\/p>\n

In a Gazette Notice dated September 16, Koome indicated where each magistrate will be working from and the cases they will be handling.<\/p>\n

“The elections (Parliamentary and county elections) petition rules, 2017, in the exercise of the powers conferred by Section 75 of the Elections Act, 2011 and Rule 6 (3) of the Elections (Parliamentary and County Elections) Petition Rules, 2017, the Chief Justice directs that the Election Petitions whose details are given here under shall be heard in the Election Courts comprising of the Judges and Magistrates listed and sitting at the Court stations indicated in the schedule below,” read part of the notice.<\/p>\n

Chief Justice Martha Koome had on March 2022 appointed the 119 special magistrates to hear and determine election-related offences.<\/p>\n

In a gazette notice published March 11, Koome said the appointments take effect from January 19, 2022.<\/p>\n

The appointments were made in all counties but some devolved units got more special magistrates than others.<\/p>\n

Nairobi has the highest number of special magistrates at seven while Kiambu, Nakuru and Nyeri have five each.<\/p>\n

Mombasa and Kisumu have four. Uasin Gishu, Migori, Murang’a, Machakos, Makueni, Siaya, Kisii, Kirinyaga, Kilifi, Embu, Bungoma and Kajiado three each.<\/p>\n

123 petitions have so far been filed in different high court stations countrywide challenging the various elections.<\/p>\n

Out of the 123 filed, 12 are for the gubernatorial elections.<\/p>\n

The Judiciary committee on elections says the petitions were filed on the e-platform as of September 14.<\/p>\n
