AfricaPress-Kenya:<\/strong> Fifa president Gianni Infantino is suspected of having intervened with Switzerland\u2019s attorney general to try to get an investigation dropped, a Swiss newspaper alleged on Monday.<\/p>\n

The Office of the Attorney General (OAG) launched an investigation in early 2016, shortly after Infantino was elected president of world football\u2019s governing body, about his awarding of a television rights contract to an offshore company in his previous role as Uefa\u2019s legal affairs director.<\/p>\n

According to the Tribune de Geneve newspaper, Infantino was \u201cworried\u201d about this investigation and wrote to his childhood friend, Rinaldo Arnold, who had become a senior prosecutor in Switzerland\u2019s Haut-Valais region where they grew up.<\/p>\n

\u201cI will try to explain to the OAG that it is in my interests that everything should be cleared up as soon as possible, that it be clearly stated that I have nothing to do with this matter,\u201d he wrote in an email cited by the newspaper.<\/p>\n

Arnold, who had helped to set up a first meeting between Infantino and Attorney General Michael Lauber, replied: \u201cWhat is important is the meeting in two weeks\u2019 time. If you like, I can come with you again.\u201d<\/p>\n

The meeting took place on Apr 22, 2016, the newspaper said, adding that what happened during it remains \u201ca mystery\u201d, and the OAG \u201crefuses to speak about it\u201d.<\/p>\n

Fifa said later on Monday \u201cthe email referred to in the article was obviously obtained by hacking, which is an illegal and criminal act.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNot only Mr Infantino had no reason to lie in that email, the email never said Mr Infantino wanted to \u2018clear his name\u2019,\u201d Fifa added.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
