Africa-Press – Kenya. <\/strong><\/span>Blazers are not sitting pretty despite climbing to second place on the women’s hockey Premier League log.<\/p>\n

The record national champions beat Sailors 1-0 on Sunday courtesy of Terry Masibo’s goal\u2014an outcome that saw them leapfrog USIU-A Spartans to second.<\/p>\n

Blazers have never played second fiddle for more than a decade and Strathmore Scorpions’ lead is giving them sleepless nights.<\/p>\n

“We are used to being at the top always so obviously, we are in unfamiliar territory. We have our fingers crossed that our rivals will drop points somewhere so that we can regain our lead,” said team captain Tracy Karanja.<\/p>\n

Scorpions lead the seven-team league with 15 points from five matches. Second-placed Blazers have 13 points while Spartans remain third with seven points although they have played three games less than Blazers.<\/p>\n

Wolverines and Sliders are fourth and fifth respectively with five points each but the latter have an inferior goal difference.<\/p>\n

Kisumu-based Lakers are sixth having won and drawn one match apiece to amass a meagre four points from as many matches. Tail-enders Sailors are winless in six matches.<\/p>\n

In the men’s category, leaders Butali produced an all-round performance to humiliate Wazalendo 4-1 in an action-packed encounter on Sunday evening.<\/p>\n

A double from Festus Onyango and a goal each from captain Constant Wakhura and Calvins Kanu were enough to extend their unbeaten run as they seek their fourth straight title.<\/p>\n

Western Jaguars also edged out Strathmore Scorpions 1-0 at their Kakamega backyard to move to the top three.<\/p>\n

“The idea is to continue bridging the gap with the top teams and let momentum continue,” Jaguars coach Mike Malungu said.<\/p>\n

Butali have 29 points from 11 matches. Kenya Police (23), Jaguars (16) and Wazalendo (16) are second, third and fourth respectively.<\/p>\n

Sailors moved to fifth with 15 points after their scrappy 1-0 win against Greensharks. Mombasa Sports Club remain bottom with four points.<\/p>\n
