Africa-Press – Kenya. <\/strong><\/span>William Odong’o hopes his recruitment to the General Service Unit volleyball team will translate into employment in order to help him lift his family from the claws of poverty.<\/p>\n

Odong’o, 22, and a libero by trade, has been signed by the paramilitary side to help solve the reception conundrum that has rocked the five-time national league champions.<\/p>\n

The former Nyanza Prisons player said the mere thought of his background gives him sleepless nights but he is determined to change the situation. The first born in a family of seven seems to have seen it all.<\/p>\n

“I had offers from Kenya Ports Authority, Equity Bank, Kenya Forest Service and Trail Blazers but opted for GSU. I was always rooting for GSU because I knew they will sign me with the assurance of employment,” Odong’o highlighted.<\/p>\n

“I am like the breadwinner in our family but look…I have not been able to secure my Kenya Secondary School Education certificate because I owe my former school ( St. Ignatius Loyola Sh 47,000,” he said.<\/p>\n

“That in itself needs no further explanation. I hope to get some cash to clear the debt.”<\/p>\n

He added: “My mind is restless… I just have to work hard and become the shining light to the family. I trust in my abilities and I hope to dislodge the more regular players in the role.”<\/p>\n

Prior to joining Nyanza Prisons, Odong’o honed his skills at Kondele Volleyball Club. Odong’o will fight for a starting berth alongside the more experienced duo of Andrew Wafula and Gabriel Ndomboi.<\/p>\n

GSU have also roped in centre player Dominic Ruto Chelule (Trail Blazers) and the Forest Rangers’ pair of Enock Kiptum (left attacker) and setter Mathias Kemboi. Simon Kosirai left for Tunisia while Brain Melly could also be on his way, according to coach Gideon Tarus.<\/p>\n

Tarus said the new signings will be in line to make their debuts during the Nyerere Cup Memorial Tournament slated for October 10-15 in Tanzania.<\/p>\n

“Odong’o is feeling right at home. Chelule is already proven while Kiptum and Kemboi are finding their feet. We want to see them fighting in Tanzania.”<\/p>\n
