Africa-Press – Kenya. <\/strong><\/span>Former LSK President Nelson Havi has said the Attorney General should appeal the Court’s decision to remove degree as a pre-requisite for vying for the governor seat.<\/p>\n

Havi said the AG should move to the Court of Appeal to challenge the directive, wondering how “illiterate” leaders are supposed to lead the country.<\/p>\n

“The Attorney General ought to appeal against the decisions removing a degree as an eligibility requirement for election of Governors, MPs and MCAs,” he tweeted on Friday.<\/p>\n

He further questioned the purpose of higher education if its qualification will not be a requirement for serving in key state roles.<\/p>\n

“What is the purpose of establishment of all these Universities if illiteracy is the qualification for elective leadership?”<\/p>\n

His remarks come after Justice Anthony Mrima declared section 22(2) of the Elections Act unconstitutional in a Friday ruling.<\/p>\n

The Act states that \u201cA person may be nominated as a candidate for election as President, Deputy President, County Governor or deputy County Governor only if the person is a holder of a degree from a university recognised in Kenya.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cA declaration hereby issued that pursuant to article 180 sub article 2 as read with section 183 of the constitution,\u201d Mrima ruled.<\/p>\n

In his statement, Havi wondered how the leaders are meant to understand and perform their mandates without the right level of education.<\/p>\n
