Africa-Press – Kenya. <\/strong><\/span>The Pharmacy and Poisons Board (PPB) has said that the ‘SOFIA’ contraceptive pill is not registered by the board even though it is still being sold in the Kenyan market.<\/p>\n

In a statement, the board said the pill is not authorised for use or distribution in Kenya.<\/p>\n

The media reports indicated the pill was still on the market and customers are made to consume the pill at the point of purchase.<\/p>\n

“We have become aware of reports in the media regarding an oral contraceptive (pill) named SOFIA that is suspected to be circulating in the Kenyan Market. The product is substandard and falsified (SF) and poses a great risk to the health and safety of the public,” read part of the statement.<\/p>\n

The ministry of health banned the pill 10 years ago because of its dangerous side effects.<\/p>\n

In order to protect the safety of the public, the PPB has initiated a rapid response and heightened surveillance to confirm and check whether the oral contraceptive “SOFIA” is currently circulating in the Kenyan market.<\/p>\n

The board said the aim of the move is to determine the source and implement legal and regulatory actions against individuals who may be handling or distributing the product.<\/p>\n

The PPB also members of the public against trading, distributing, wholesaling, retailing, issuing, or dispensing this product as it amounts to illegal activities and endangers the safety and health of the public.<\/p>\n

The PPB said they shall take stern legal and regulatory actions against perpetrators of such offences.<\/p>\n

“The PPB encourages members of the public and healthcare providers to report all suspicious, substandard, and falsified medical products to the Pharmacy and Poisons Board.”<\/p>\n
