Africa-Press – Kenya. <\/strong><\/span>Equity Bank head coach David Maina wants Kenyan teams to go back to transition basketball if they are to regain their poise in the region.<\/p>\n

Speaking after the FIBA Africa Zone Five Women Club championships in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania Maina said it’s time things changed.<\/p>\n

“We must get out of set play basketball and go to transition, which is what gave us good results,” Maina observed.<\/p>\n

“There is need to teach our players a lot of ball handling because they lack the confidence during crucial moments.”<\/p>\n

Kenyan giants Kenya Ports Authority and Equity Bank Hawks took part in the regional show, finishing second and fifth respectively.<\/p>\n

Maina said Kenyan teams must get used to playing under pressure if they are to succeed.<\/p>\n

“When put under pressure, our confidence goes down. This is where our problem lies. And coaches need to work on this so that we can compete at the highest level,” he said.<\/p>\n

In the final, KPA took an 8-0 lead against Alexandria Sporting Club (ASC)of Egypt but wilted in the end, surrendering their title in a 78-67 loss.<\/p>\n

“When our teams are under pressure, they kill the ball as they have problems taking their opponents one-on-one,” Maina said. “Kenyans are at their best when running at the opposition and this was clear from the results posted during the championship.”<\/p>\n

At the same time, Maina noted that the post players must come out to dominate in the paint, score points and pull down rebounds.<\/p>\n

“The presence of the post players in the ‘D’ must be encouraged. They must be able to challenge for rebounds, score or generate the second shots,” he said.<\/p>\n

“By finishing second at the tournament, KPA will, alongside ASC, represent the region at the Africa Club Championships in Maputo, Mozambique later in the year.<\/p>\n

Vitalis Gode, the zonal secretary general revealed that they are pushing for the inclusion of a third team in the show.<\/p>\n

Rwanda Patriotic Army (APR) dimmed compatriots Rwanda Energy Group (REG) 42-39 to claim the bronze medal and a chance to play at the continental event.<\/p>\n

Nine teams including Nile Legends ( South Sudan), Young Sisters (Burundi), Walktie (Ethiopia) and Vijana Queens (Tanzania) took part in the six-day event.<\/p>\n
