Africa-Press – Kenya. <\/strong><\/span>The Directorate of Criminal Investigation women’s volleyball team is banking on experience to help them defend the annual Nyerere Cup tournament slated for Arusha, Tanzania next week.<\/p>\n

The sleuths have won the past three editions of the competition in a row \u2014 a rare feat for the DCI, who have become a mid-table team on the local front. They beat Hakika last year in straight sets in the final.<\/p>\n

The five-day competition takes place between October 10-15 with General Service Unit and Kenya Forest Service also expected to carry the Kenyan flag in the men’s cadre.<\/p>\n

DCI coach Daniel Bor challenged his charges to put up a spirited fight despite being out of competitive action since May.<\/p>\n

The national women’s league was stopped to allow Kenya Commercial Bank, Kenya Prisons and Kenya Pipeline take part in the African Club Championship held in Tunisia. The bankers won the trophy after 16 years.<\/p>\n

Players were further starved of action as Malkia Strikers left for Brazil in mid-June for High-Performance Training ahead of the ongoing FIVB World Championships, where they exited at the first hurdle.<\/p>\n

“Sometimes it’s tough to predict what to expect from your players because the league is still in recess but that should not be an excuse if we have to attain our targets,” Bor insisted.<\/p>\n

“We have the quality to once again reign supreme and I am sure the girls are up to the task. We have to play with hunger and determination to ensure that we take home our fourth title. I hope the players will enjoy the experience outside normal training.”<\/p>\n

DCI will use the tournament as part of their preparations for the local league. The decision on whether the women’s competition will continue remains unclear.<\/p>\n

“Now is the time for the players to apply what they have been doing behind the scenes. I look forward to seeing new players grab their chance. Hopefully, the combinations will work out well.”<\/p>\n
