Africa-Press – Kenya. <\/strong><\/span>Kenya Police hockey team captain Victor Wekesa believes their win against Sikh Union in the final of the Jerico hockey festival in Mombasa over the weekend could be a turning point in their season.<\/p>\n

Govan Mbeki and John Kaloti scored for the law enforcers in their 2-0 victory to put a smile on the players’ faces after registering mixed fortunes in the men’s Premier League in the last couple of weeks.<\/p>\n

“I believe the trophy could be a stepping stone to better things to come from the team. We have not been at our best recently but we proved we can never be written off just yet.”<\/p>\n

Police managed four points in the opening three league matches before embarking on a six-game winning run.<\/p>\n

However, a 1-1 draw against Wazalendo and Sailors have threatened to taint their season, allowing their fiercest rivals Butali Warriors to capitalise on their slip.<\/p>\n

The sugar millers opened a six-point gap and are on course to a fourth consecutive title amid their rich vein of form giving them an upper hand.<\/p>\n

“Players who have played peripheral roles this season enjoyed more minutes and the bond with the regulars was eye-catching. Now they know what it takes to earn their place in the team but they must be ready to handle the pressure.”<\/p>\n

Police have missed key players and their defensive frailties and lack of a cutting-edge on the opposite end have proved costly to the team that last bagged the national title in 2017.<\/p>\n

Striker Mbeki was in his element after emerging top scorer with six goals. However, defender Kennedy Sibweche joined the long list of players on the treatment table after suffering a knee injury.<\/p>\n

“Defensively, we have looked suspect and that calls for collective effort due to the unavailable of injured players. Conversion has become a song. We dominate matches, fail to convert the chances and we get punished.”<\/p>\n

Police return to action and have a date with red-hot Western Jaguars on October 22 in Kakamega.<\/p>\n
