Africa-Press – Kenya. <\/strong><\/span>President William Ruto has dismissed a court ruling against the government’s bid to increase NSSF deductions.<\/p>\n

The Labour and Employment Relations Court had declared the bid unconstitutional, null and void.<\/p>\n

The court ruled the NSSF Act, 2013, is in breach of the Constitution as there was no public participation ahead of its enactment.<\/p>\n

However, on Tuesday, Ruto said that Kenyans must drive the NSSF saving agenda.<\/p>\n

“Majority of people on the roll of NSSF are paying Sh200, it is ridiculous We just got a ruling from the court a week ago that it is wrong for us to increase from Sh200, I don’t know really what we are doing. Do we live in the same country?” Ruto said.<\/p>\n

Ruto said that he has agreed with NSSF to talk to the court and reconsider the ruling.<\/p>\n

Ruto sought to increase the contributions from the current standard fee of Sh200 to match up to one\u2019s monthly earnings.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe cannot continue to borrow from the savings of others. We need to build our country with our savings. Let us borrow from our savings so that we can give interest to our lenders,\u201d Ruto said.<\/p>\n

Unions had said the changes would negatively affect pensioners.<\/p>\n

The amount has remained unchanged for over 20 years.<\/p>\n

Petitioners, who were before the court, had said NSSF would be a monopoly if the hefty deductions were allowed.<\/p>\n
