Africa-Press – Kenya. <\/strong><\/span>Allan Oyende has promised to improve his game at next week’s Africa Scrabble Championships in Lusaka, Zambia.<\/p>\n

The African Championships are returning after a two-year break due to coronavirus.<\/p>\n

Speaking after winning the final ASC Invitational Masters tournament at the Nairobi Stima Club on Monday, Oyende said his mission in Lusaka will be to improve his performance.<\/p>\n

The Nigerians dominated the last continental championship that was held in Kenya<\/p>\n

\u201cWe lost at home to Nigeria but this time, I have done enough practice to enable me to win the title in Lusaka,” he said. Oyende was the top Kenyan in the fourth position in the last edition with Stanley Njoroge coming in seventh.<\/p>\n

Oyende will lead a 25-man national scrabble squad to the championships scheduled for October 21-24 in Mulungushi.<\/p>\n

At Stima Club, the home player won 22 matches, losing 10 in the 32-game tournament to reclaim his top position. The three-day event is World English Scrabble Players Association (WESPAC) rated tournament,<\/p>\n

\u201cBeing Kenya One may be simple but maintaining that position is not easy. I lost in some of the games that were very tough and managed to come out clean to victory,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

He defeated Machakos tournament champion Patrick Nderitu Gitonga to the second position while Uganda’s Edgar Odongkara was third. The tournament also attracted top-seeded players from across Africa.<\/p>\n

On his way to victory, he beat Fred Magu and lost to Ugandan Davis Apuuli, Nderitu, Tony Ochola, Philip Mutinda, and Bernard Amuke among others.<\/p>\n

Amuke, who is the Scrabble Kenya chairman, said they have a serious team to compete against top players in the continent.<\/p>\n
