Africa-Press – Kenya. <\/strong><\/span>Kenya is among the 143 countries that voted at the United Nations General Assembly against Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.<\/p>\n

The 143 states demanded that Russia reverses the annexation of four regions in Ukraine.<\/p>\n

The vote signifies support for Ukraine by three-quarters of the 193-member general assembly.<\/p>\n

However, four countries including Syria, Nicaragua, North Korea and Belarus joined Russia in voting against the resolution to declare the annexation illegal.<\/p>\n

During the vote, 35 countries abstained. A majority of these countries were African nations, alongside China and India.<\/p>\n

According to the Guardian, Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelenskiy who spoke after the vote said he was grateful to the 143 countries that supported the general assembly’s resolution.<\/p>\n

“The world had its say, Russia\u2019s attempt at annexation is worthless and will never be recognised by free nations,” he said.<\/p>\n

In September, Russia proclaimed its annexation of Donetsk, Luhansk, Kherson and Zaporizhzhia after staging referendums in the Ukrainian areas which they occupied.<\/p>\n

The resolution however, declares Moscow\u2019s actions as violation of Ukraine\u2019s sovereignty and territorial integrity, which is inconsistent with the principles of the UN charter and have no validity under international law.<\/p>\n

US president Joe Biden in a statement said, Russia cannot claim to have capture the territory of another country and call it hers.<\/p>\n

“The stakes of this conflict are clear to all, and the world has sent a clear message in response \u2013 Russia cannot erase a sovereign state from the map.”<\/p>\n

US secretary of state Antony Blinken said the vote had shown international unity against Russia and that they cannot recognise sham referendums.<\/p>\n

“The vote is a powerful reminder that the overwhelming majority of nations stand with Ukraine, in defence of the UN Charter and in resolute opposition to Russia\u2019s ongoing war against Ukraine and its people,\u201d he said in a statement.<\/p>\n

The general assembly vote followed a veto by Russia last month of a similar resolution in the 15-member security council.<\/p>\n

Russia started it’s invasion of Ukraine in February this year and the war between the two countries has been ongoing.<\/p>\n
