Africa-Press – Kenya. <\/strong><\/span>The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission has called on professional bodies to be in the front line in fighting corruption.<\/p>\n

The Commission pointed out that their joining in the fight is important considering most graft scandals in the country are facilitated by their members.<\/p>\n

“Over the years, we have observed that majority of the corruption investigations undertaken by EACC involve professionals such as accountants, auditors, bankers, lawyers, supply chain practitioners, engineers and human resource practitioners,” vice chairperson Monica Muiru said.<\/p>\n

By virtue of their duties, the professionals have a crucial role in preventing corruption, she observed.<\/p>\n

She spoke in Mombasa during the recently concluded Annual Governance and Ethics Conference.<\/p>\n

Muiru further said professionals remain a key pillar in the journey to transform Kenya into a fully ethical country.<\/p>\n

While noting that corruption remains a major obstacle to good governance, it has has affected the ease of doing business and hurt the economy.<\/p>\n

“In the education system, academic fraud and forgery of academic papers have resulted in deserving students missing out on opportunities in the job market.<\/p>\n

“Services rendered by such employees are substandard owing to the fact that they are ill equipped with the right skills, knowledge and attitudes required for the job,” she said.<\/p>\n

Muiru said even though the EACC has attained some milestones in the fight against corruption, the vice still remains a huge challenge to development.<\/p>\n

The forum, which brought together accountants from across the country, was organized by the Institute of Certified Public Accountants of Kenya (ICPAK).<\/p>\n

ICPAK is the professional body established to register, regulate and develop the accountancy profession in the country.<\/p>\n

It has a membership of over 23,000 professional accountants working in both public and private sectors.<\/p>\n

Muiru challenged ICPAK and other professional bodies to develop corruption prevention and mitigation strategies to enhance ethical practices among their members.<\/p>\n

“One way of doing this is by infusing fraud and corruption reporting requirements into codes of ethics and conduct for professionals,” she said.<\/p>\n
